Hello all, newbie here. Just got my first ever truck! Woo hoo! I love my Tundra, but there's a story behind it. Anyway, I have a question.

Is Toyota's timing belt and water pump a brand name of Aisin? Or is it really Toyota's? I heard friends telling me that when I do my timing belt and water pump replacement, never go with any other brands but Toyota's. A nephew of mine did his three years ago and he chose to go with a different brand (not of Toyota's) and the water pump failed within a year. He replaced it with Toyota's and it's working wonderfully since. Probably just a coincident, but he now swears by Toyota's OEM brand.

I was checking on Ebay and I saw a few claiming to be OEM for Toyota and there's an Aisin brand, also claiming to be OEM for Toyota.

    Following are three brands/kinds:

    Toyota's OEM brand:

    Aisin OEM brand:

    No name OEM:

Of your experience, is there really a difference between Toyota's and other brands?

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Tundras.com!

I would go with Toyota just to be safe...sure, you may pay more, but it's probably safer in the end....or u could just be paying for the name :dunno:

I remember aisin being the OEM Japanese brand for some components in the older pickup I had. You should check with the dealership though.

I did my timing belt and water pump last year and used Toyota parts. The belt cost me $70.00 and the water pump was around $120.00, I did the job myself and it took about two days. So far they both have been holding up great.

This is the one I'm leaning toward.

Anyone have any feedback on this kit or the seller?? Used to be a guy named Volkstoy that sold the most popular kits on ebay. After years of nothing but perfect rating he changed his name ebay store name to something like auto1 or something. Anyway, that store closed VERY shortly after the change leaving a big void for us 1st gen guys.

Aisin is to Toyota, like Delco is to GM, or Motorcraft is to Ford. It is a division of Toyota. That is what I have been told by several people, and it does make sense because several parts I have bought from Toyota direct were Aisin.

Friend of mine had a Aisin belt installed and he had a failure within 10K. He was emphatic in telling me not to use that brand.. By the way' he has broken the original and the Aisin and in neither case was there any internal valve/ piston issues. He has a 2002 4.7. WIll those clearance issues only manifest themselves when the belt breaks at high RPMs or was he just very lucky?

I just had mine replaced by the dealer. It was a non Toyota belt made of steel fiber and rubber. I m assuming it was the 2nd belt ,it began to frey from the sides and would hit the sides of the cover then got real loud one day so i took it in to the dealer. I think it was about 1,500 for belt and water pump and labor. I would not recommend using any name for the belt than Toyota. If you use a dealer ask to write on the ticket keep all parts removed. Always try and research you dealers record. El Paso was extremely terrible San Diego is Fantastic.
