Diamondback and Gas Can

I have a Diamondback cover and am curious to know thoughts about carrying/leaving gas locked in the bed. The gas can is a Wavian 20L Nato. I can strap to the top and lock it but hey, I am lazy. There will be other items in the bed such as stuff to go on vacation with. The majority of the items in the bed will be removed frequently. The truck will be in direct sunlight most of the time.

If the can was on top of the cover it would be physically in the sunlight. Wouldn't that be worst then having it protected from the sunlight by being under the cover? You have taken the direct sunlight from hitting the can which in my opinion would heat the can up greater if was not shaded from the sun by being under the cover. As for the fumes, this is a 20L metal can that is sealed and has only 5 gallons of gas in it which leaves a lot of head space for fume expansion.

I have noticed that the DB cover itself can get extremely hot but when I open it up I don't notice the same heat in the bed itself. Matter of fact my cab seems to be hotter than the bed. Might be time for a temperature experiment.

The safest bet would be just to leave it at home.

Good question, I usually carry an empty can but thinking of filling it for the long drive to the campground, under the DB, then put the gas in the tank when I got there if I didn't need it. Would wedge it on the left:

Let’s be realistic. Some people have an external gas tank in the bed. I think you should be fine as long as it’s in a nice solid container. Get a heavy duty gas can and make sure it is strapped up securely. The cover is a plus and will help keep the fuel cool.

 

I carry gas for my chain saw and generator in the back. I have a topper and leave the side windows open a bit. The DB cover should be OK the more I think about it. Go for it!

 

believe what you want, but i think some of ya'll are being a bit narrow minded to think that our fuel systems are air tight. I mean you're basically sitting on a 30 gallon tank of gas, what's the difference in having a tank in the bed?

Cars and trucks spew fumes everywhere, especially older models with corroding seals and the likes. Hell my '72 beetle smelled like gas 24/7, gas tank pretty much on my lap and i smoked doobs like a damned chiefton in that thing. do you see vehicles all over exploding in the hot sun? or lawn care trailers? stupid jeepers with jerry cans hanging of the back to look cool? I don't.

hot air isn't going to spontaneously combust gasoline...there's just a lot of fucking nit whits out there that have done stupid shit and some fear monger has exploited their dumb ass.

If the gas cans are anything like what the military uses my concern would be the slight spillage from hitting bumps and the smell of fuel under the cover.

 

Just don’t fill more than 4 gallons. When I fill my 5 gallon can with more than 4 gallons, the heat and bumps from wheeling cause it to overflow and spill onto the bed. And I also purge it once or twice a day when it gets really hot or cold.

Wavian are the best cans out there imo. I have 8 of them. I have a cabinet that I can carry 5 in... has individual dividers .

 

If you bleed fumes or spill, everything you put in your bed will smell like gasoline. For this reason alone, if I did not need the extra 5 gal. I would not do it. That said, I haul gas and diesel inside my shell pretty often.

 

If you're just going to camp then taking out of the bed you should be fine
