After I did my first oil change, I knew I was going to break the plastic piece of shit somehow. Well...I did. I do not know why the would put a plastic one on the truck but they did. After some research I found they made a metal one that fits. Popped on Amazon where toyota has a store, and got this guy for pretty cheap. Only thing I had to do was put the tundra tube into the housing as it is longer than the one it comes equipped with. I am a lot more confident in this cap and do not now why they didnt equip these vehicles with it in the first place.

    http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Toyot...psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00

    Highly recommended.

I found this write-up the other day. Was thinking of doing the same.

Nice. If you want to reiterate how to transfer it over and add up some pics we can turn this into a DIY thread??

Switched out mine on the first oil change. Didn't break the plastic one during removal - just didn't like it.

I'll be doing this to my 2014 Tundra when its time for my first oil change. I'll do a wright up. I understand that it requires some modification. Can't believe Toyota put such a cheap part on such an important and frequently used item... :annoyed: I hope this is not a new trend...

I'm sure Toyota knew they could make some more cash on the side by selling the others rather than including them. Its a universal trick done by the greedy.

Swapped mine for the aluminum one on the first oil change. Think I paid $25 for it. Well worth it!

    Not nearly enough room here!
The recently eliminated Driver's side grab handle comes to mind.

    Working on it
I have a 2019 CrewMax 5.7. My guess is this will fit and I understand I will have to swap out the perforated core as the Tundra core is longer. However, this doesn't seem to come with a drain plug. Do I need to order a drain plug as well or can I reuse the original one and is the original one metal? Sorry I can't see it well enough without having to pull the skid plate first.

    Thanks

You can reuse the original drain plug, which is metal.

No, it's nothing new. I can name some earlier issues like rusty frames and beds and the dreaded AIP valves.

I am curious about this also, my 2010 has 77k miles on it and I recently changed the oil for the 15th time with the plastic element holder, no problem.

I've changed the oil on many Toyotas with the canister type filter and I've never had an issue with the plastic cover. Generally when I've replaced them it was due to the previous person used the wrong tool to remove the cover and broke it. I've had more problems with aluminum covers than plastic. Saturn would be a nightmare when the goon before would use all his weight tightening it. This is my set I use for Toyota vehicles. Never had a problem.

How did you get the old tube out of the OEM housing? Did you have to bend the metal tab? I don't want to damage it.
