Mine didn't either and last month I took it in and they said since so many people have had problem with that system,,,they were covering the repair,,$2000 to change pumps and replace the other parts

I thought I just needed the lite reset,,and they gave me the bad news and then the good news
Mine is a 2007 also 85,000 miles. I am the second owner and just got it last year

Alright I guess it's worth a try. I reset the light today so I guess I'll wait and see if it comes back. Yeah mine is at 82k. Never had any issues besides the power steering pump went out at like 60k

Why not call the dealer and ask? Never know - worth a shot.

    Sadly....none
I finally got my truck back last Friday 3 July, after almost 3 months. Thankfully they replaced all parts of the Air Injection Pump system. The service manager stated that the production line that builds the parts had been shut down for some reason which is causing the long wait times for the parts. The bill for the rental vehicles being charge to Toyota was about $4500, plus the cost of shop time and parts. I'm just glad that It was covered by the extended warranty. I also inquired about why the information wasn't being disseminated to Toyota tundra owners when I was talking to some female at the Toyota help desk. She said that it isn't every tundra and only specific ones. Regardless I'd bug the heck out of them should your truck develop the same problems.

I'm having this issue right now (P0419). I did some research, Toyota used this part for 2007 to 2011 and they issued a TSB that recognizes. They extended the warranty for these parts to 10 yr 150k miles since this is supposed to be a maintenance free system that should last the life of the truck but they only did this for the 2007 to 2010 Tundras. For some reason us 2011 Tundra owners are getting screwed.

The issue is the hose assembly allows water into the pumps and sometimes moves down to the valves and corrodes them. Check out the TSB and it details out the previous parts and the new part numbers. I ordered the pump, hose and gaskets for ~$200 and will be doing this repair myself this weekend since Toyota isn't owning up to their mistake.

If anyone is interested in seeing the TSB or the extended warranty letter issued by Toyota please send me a message with your email address and I'll send it to you.

I also have PDF'd a complete list of the Tundra error codes and the repair manual for this pump from the Chilton manual.

Here's a link to the documents, if it doesn't work send me a message.

I am looking at getting a 2007 4x2 5.7L reg cab tundra. I'm concerned by the possible secondary air intake problems. Does anyone know what the cost would be to replace it on my own? What is there percentage chance it goes bad? Would Toyota consider the warranty extended through to the secondary owner?

    Thank you

It should be covered. See attached. I have a 2011 that had the same problem, cost me around $200 in parts (pump and new intake hose) and did it myself.

Sean, were you taken care of via warranty or the extended warranty? I am at 67K on my 12 Tundra and have a warranty up to 100K.

Hell, might buy another one just to cover the AIP pumps. From my understanding and talking to one of the designers of the bypass systems, once the updates/recalls have been done, they no longer work....which blows.

Ya I brought it in that Monday and they did the recall that morning.
The AIP is 5/150k I think...may be wrong the year part though.

Too bad I found this thread after it happened to me... oh well... new member as of right now after I read this thread. My Tundra just had this happen yesterday, 2011 CrewMax. Unfortunately the 2011's are only covered for 6yrs/60k (whichever comes first, and that's the important part!) and I'm at 5 years, but 63k so no longer covered... paid $2k for the repair...grrrr... well at least I know for next time...

I'd try to get it paid for as a warranty item anyway. Might take patience and perseverance on your part. Had ours (2008) done at 130 k and got a letter from Toyota week or so ago that Toyota was extending the warranty!
I'd go for it even if you paid. Can't hurt?

Thanks Chuck, after reading the posts here and doing more research online, I decided to do just that! The service advisor wouldn't budge, but I escalated to the Service Manager and he contacted the regional warranty rep (or something like that) and covered everything, including my rental! Glad to have found all this info here! It enabled me to talk to them knowing all the background and the details so they couldn't claim I didn't know what I was talking about. Thanks again!

If only I had bought one year model older...

I just finished replacing the air valve. Now getting yet another code but I think it's just a simple reprogramming that the dealer can do.

Thankfully I had my 2007 Tundra's AIP replaced under Toyota's extended warrantee program back in 2012. Unfortunately the issue has reared its ugly head again. I took my truck to the Toyota dealer this morning. They called saying it's the same issue with the same AIP! And since it is the same AIP that was already replaced, they cannot do it again under the 10yr/150K mi warrantee! They offered to pay for parts if I would pay for labor ($600+) but this is senseless that it was supposed to be corrected the first time and now I have to deal with it again! The replacement part was only warranteed for 1 year. I placed a call to Toyota HQ but doubt it will make a difference. I'm looking into that bypass system that was talked about on here.

How long ago was the work done? This is not the first time I heard of a second failure with aip.

I would argue to Toyota the work was done incorrectly or this would not have happened for a second time.

Previous work was done in 2012. My thoughts exactly...if they corrected it 4 years ago, why the same problem?

To be honest it sounds like a design/supplier problem. This started in 2005/2006 with this problem and they still don't have it right.

If Toyota will not warranty there work (techs) /supplier in this case I would do the bypass and you will never have to worry about it ever again.

There are some good links ( use Google people forget on these boards) there are plenty of work arounds. No hope is lost.

Same happened to me several days ago "VSC off", check engine, and what looks like traction control lights came on. And the truck slowed down to just 2000 RPMS (LIMP mode).
I have a 5.7 L 2007 Toyota Tundra Limited with 145500 miles on it, with no previous issues. I used the CRT cleaner kit and cleaned the throttle body and MAF, lights still on. Plugged in ODBC reader and got "P2440 Air Inj System switching Open Bank V1v Stuck Open" .
I read the forums here and it pointed to the "air induction pump assemblies and air injection switching valves" $3000 Repair. But also on the forums, Toyota extended the warranty to 10yrs 150000 miles. So I took it to the dealer, they didn't charge me to look at it. An hour later they came back with the exact repair from this forum. Air induction pump assemblies, about $3000, but Toyota will fully cover it, no charge to me. I just made that warranty. I left it overnight and they called me that it's ready for pickup. Ubering over to pick it up now. My alternative if not covered was going to be that bypass kit. thanks

Interesting that they went back to Secondary air injection.
Statement from Wikipedia. "Secondary air injection (commonly known as air injection, or colloquially smog pump or pollution pump) is a vehicle emissions control strategy introduced in 1966, wherein fresh air is injected into the exhaust stream to allow for a fuller combustion of exhaust gases. As car manufacturers began to replace carburetors with electronic fuel injection, air injection systems were no longer necessary as the amount of unburned fuel in the exhaust was dramatically reduced."

I didn't read back to check, sorry. But my understanding is that in this case the system is used to get the cats up to temp faster.

Normally I would agree with you but Toyota put a sour taste in my mouth, they only did this for 2007 to 2010 year models but used the same parts in 2011 year models so I was left high and dry by Toyota.

I had a pleasant outcome with a bad air pump that I wanted to share. Hopefully my story will help some of you with this issue. My daughter’s 2007 Tundra had the same issue, bad air pump in the hard to reach engine side, my local mechanic said it would be about $2k to $3k to fix.

I called Toyota Service (their phone number: Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-888-270-9371 Monday through Friday, 5:00 am to 6:00 pm, or Saturday 7:00 am through 4:00 pm Pacific Time) about the extended air pump warrantee. They told me the warrantee had already been used by Toyota Auto Nation in South Austin, Texas who had completed the service in January of 2015 (I’m writing this as of Aug, 2016). They also told me that since the warrantee had already been used I could not use it again.

My wife thought I should take it back down to the dealership (we live in North Austin) that supposedly fixed it the first time. I thought she was nuts, based on all the comments in this and other forums about how un-helpful the dealerships generally are. But to avoid nagging I called the dealership and spoke with a guy named Adam. He looked up the original repair work and said yes, that work had been done there. He also said it was the first time he heard of a truck coming back in with the same issue after it had been fixed. He asked me to bring the truck down so he could have his mechanics look at it.

I almost didn’t go, since it seemed like all he would do would be to say it wouldn’t be covered and I’d have to pay for it myself. But, I went anyway, mostly to avoid my wife’s nagging but partly based on a sliver of hope that something good would happen, because I sure as heck didn’t have $2 or $3k sitting around to pay for a repair.

I brought the truck down to the dealership and Adam was very pleasant and had the vehicle taken in to be looked at. Sure enough, he confirmed the bad air pump on the engine side. I thought “here we go, he’ll tell me I have to pay for it.”

He told me that the dealership had not replaced that pump, because when the original work was done Toyota required the dealerships to only replace the pump that triggered the code, not both pumps. Since the engine side pump had never been replaced with the original warranty work, he said he would call Toyota Warranty and get them to pay for this service. He also said that very often when the air pump is bad, it also causes the rest of the system to go bad, typically with rust that builds up in the valves. He gave me a loaner, and said he’d put an order in to replace the entire system, airpump, valves, the works. I can’t tell you how pleasantly surprised I was.

It took about 2 weeks for the repair work to be completed, mostly due to waiting for a back-ordered part. When it was done, Adam called me and I brought the loaner back, signed the paperwork, and shook hands with him and left. The dealership had completed the entire repair of the whole system, and I didn’t pay a cent! I also didn’t pay anything at all for the use of the loaner.

So, if you are facing the same situation with a bad air pump, call Toyota service and find out where the warranty work had been done on your vehicle (if it had been done). If it was never done, have the Toyota dealership fix it using the warranty.

If the warranty work already had been done, and if that dealership is relatively near you, take it back to the dealership that did the warranty work and share this story with them. Maybe you too will get your second work done for free under the warranty like I did.

As for me, I’m a BIG fan now of Toyota Auto Nation, and of Adam in their service department. There are several Toyota dealerships that are a lot closer to me, but any future work on my daughter’s truck will be done down there.

Good luck on your air pump work. Hopefully this story will help you if you are facing the same situation I was.

PS – Now I’m researching the bypass kit. My concern is that since there’s no filters, there’s nothing to stop the new air pumps from going bad again. I’m investigating putting in a Hewitt bypass kit to shut the system off so it doesn’t go bad again. However, Adam told me the new air pump system comes with a snorkel that allows water to drain out of the system, which should eliminate any future problems with the system. I’m not sure, so I’m doing more investigating before I decide to use the bypass kit. Has anyone here had issues with the replaced air pump or installed the bypass kit, and how did that go?
