Plans changed last minute and I'm looking for somewhere to camp, tent style, near Thousand Oaks. Everything is booked and the Parks system won't allow me to reserve anything on such short notice anyhow. I'm considering Lake Perris but any other ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi, Warren @831Tun , I agree with mark. If not Hungry Valley, there are others to the south along I-5. Not beach camping but nice this time of year. Pyramid Lake may have camping, about halfway down the grade between Lebec and Castaic. Growing up, I lived in Ventura a while then Lockwood Valley/ Frazier Park area. If you'll be driving down the coast, a scenic drive up over the mountains is 33 north through Ojai, then turn East onto Lockwood Valley Road. All paved roads but not straight, and pretty California mountain badlands.

Thanks @Sunnier. I went to the 1st grade in Ventura, Pierpont elementary.
I was looking at 33 and thinking that might offer some possibilities. Maybe I'll be able to find something in Los Padres.

Nice, putting that thing to use right away! Getting a camping spot is pretty hard on 3 day weekends. You should find a spot at the end of a long difficult trail. Much higher chance. And you get to wheel too. Win, win. Shit, I'll pack up the family and go with you if you find a hard trail.

Man, end of July, come up to Courtwright. My FIL is suggesting Dusty Ershim trail. It doesn't sound wise to do this one solo?

    Try this: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lpnf/recarea/?recid=11024

If you don't like this exact one, if you pinch open the map, it shows several others nearby.

That area the 33 runs through leaving Ojai is pretty lush compared with the areas higher up/ farther from the ocean. There's a creek that runs alongside 33. Any camp I that Canyon would probably have good vegetation, sun and shade, and maybe water.
