If you had to pick today with no regard to ammo $, only performance, which and why. Thanks for any input.

6 beats 6.5 in my book because BC is better. When the 6 hit the market everyone put their 6.5s up for sale. Long range tactical competition is my perspective, your purpose for the gun may be different. I'm not sure either one beats a 243 built around the 115gr DTAC which is what I shoot.

Thanks, I'm building this as my go to precision rifle with a twist, so I guess it has to be the best mutitasker as well(size of prey flexibility?).

Interesting read. I hear good things about the 26 nosler but I haven't shot it. I would counter the comparison between 6 and 6.5 with my personal experience of pushing a 115gr DTAC at 3200fps with a BC of .620. I believe that gives the edge to the 243.

You haven't said what you are going to use the cartridge for and maybe we should have started there. While rounds in this class are excellent whitetail killers I use them for tactical rifle comps. You need to be an experienced handloader and willing to spend major bucks on a custom rig with a very short barrel life.

Obviously this is just scratching the surface of a very deep discussion of precision rifle shooting. I've been doing it for a long time and it's my passion so if you need advice I'm happy to help. I'm not saying I know everything about it, no one does. I just don't know where you are in your learning of the craft.

    Thanks!
Nothing more than a toy, I won't shoot it much, but long range target shooting is intended use. I don't have a lot of guns, more try to have the most practical(that I like) gun set up for intended use. So the bright shiny gotta have it side of me needs 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor. That said there is just not much info other than barrel life and cost per round, neither matter much to me. So out in the desert long range plinking, I don't hunt actively, but it will see coyotes etc. if needed. Usually this would be a clear decision for me, but the pros and cons of these two rounds do a good job of cancelling each other out, drawn towards the 6mm only cause I like that it is a little more exotic.

Let us know how it groups shooting the heavy weight bullets you were considering.

Interesting reads and discussion. I never understood the long range competition stuff. Highly technical and interesting, just wasn't ever my thing.
My loads typically have dinner or pests as their ultimate targets rather than paper or steel. Unless I'm zeroing.

I'm really looking into moving away from .308 for hogs and into .300 BLK. I really like the subsonic character and suppressability of the round/platform. Ideal hog platform imo. Not feasible until I move out of NewYorkistan.

300 win mag is what I run when I get the urge to roll a bolt and put some venison on the table. More than capable at 800+ but I'm not taking those shots on game. Paper and steel for fun, sure.

Not much energy in the 300blk. I certainly would say not enough for hogs. At least not the big ones. The other problem is that it drops like a rock. You are gonna need to know the exact distance and the dope. Just suppress your 300wm. That's how I roll. I even suppress crazy hot loads in a 300 RUM. Works great.

We rarely see/saw anything larger than 250lbs. And you're running the edges of crops at night. Rarely taking shots past 60 yards. 300 BLK won't have an issue. I don't think it would be effective at greater than 100 yards (I mean I'd feel less confident in it - but that's what 30-rd pmags are for)

Just looking for something lighter and quieter.

Since you've had the 6mm for a year, give us a report. How does it group? What bullet are you shooting? What scope did you put on it?

Can’t say much, only had it out once, stupid grown up crap always plaguing me... I know very little about the technical side of shooting, so with that said, using Hornady ammo in all my guns. Not many box 6mm creedmoor rounds available, they have 3 now. Been hunting and shooting my whole life, little different than I’m used to, but very impressed initially.

The scope is a scratch and dent Nikon, not sure what off hand. Way more rifle than scope, but ok for me and my ability(lack of) for awhile.

The predator is an amazing gun, get the magpul stock for it makes the handling difference immense. I always say if you plan on the long shot your dope count is very easy with both and the 6.5 is for hunting/target and the 6mm is for target alone hunting with it doesn't really have the knockdown power that you want.

And huge hint for any of you that are in the military or have a family member in the military vortex optics does a 50% or 40% off program for all of their products getting a 5-25x50 for around $700 is a fucking steal. Sig also does this program so for anyone buying a new rifle or want to buy the scope first you will thank me later. making that large purchase first, then buying the rifle purchase a little less of a sting.

Vortex makes great scopes for the price point and would be a major step up from the "scratch and dent" Nikon on the OP's rifle.

However based on the amount of use the rifle has seen over the past year, spending another dime on it might be a waste of money.

Vizsla, if you handload you have alot more bullet options. Ultimately however your bullet selection Wil be based on your Barrel twist rate. I would be happy to help you with bullet selection if you can tell me the twist rate.

Ha, just put the Nikon on cause I had it, and want real live experience from local shooters selecting the correct one before purchase due to the high cost. It will get the proper scope it deserves when I have time, think I’ve done 5 years worth of crap in 1 year. Use is subjective, I have brand new guns that will probably never get shot, but still spend money on them.

From memory the 6mm creedmoor is finicky about barrel twist and mine is supposedly correct at 1:7.7. Arizona is pretty much shut down due to fire restrictions for the near future, so even though I have time soon, it would be a bit irresponsible to get out. I do not hand load, but would love advice, my father in law would like that project.

Wow, Ruger really stepped up with a good twist rate. The 7.7 twist will stabilize heavy bullets which for you would be the 103 and 108gr. I'm guessing your best groups would come from the 108. If you ever decide to get into handloading, I'm guessing the 115 grain bullets may also work well for you. And contrary to what others may tell you, the heavyweight bullets in 6mm guns are ample for any deer size game. About 25 years ago I killed a Vermont white tail that weighed 180lbs after field dressing. One 100gr remington Core Lokt bullet killed him dead as fried chicken. I've killed tons of Texas white tail before and since then with the 243 Winchester which is 6mm.

My father in law handloads everything, and I would certainly buy whatever he needs to accommodate. So any further suggestions on a good starting point for him would be appreciated! It really is a nice rifle for the price. Spent my childhood plinking varmints with a .222, wouldn’t hesitate to deer hunt with the 6mm creedmoor after shooting it.

I'm sure your FIL can help you with load development. I would shoot several 5 shot groups with factory ammo with the goal of beating factory loads with handloading. I would start with new premium brass like Lapua or Nosler. If cost is an issue, then try Winchester brass. I think your best groups will come from slow burning premium powders like H1000 or Reloader 26, maybe Retumbo.

For 6 creed I'd check out the Prime stuff. I've shot their 6.5 load pretty extensively and it's money. I've been shooting the 110smk in my 6mm Dasher, and it had been pretty impressive, but two people who had Dashers built off the same reamer said the latest batch of SMKs won't group. Switching to the 108ELD seems to be working for a lot of people in a 1:7. Can't imagine why it wouldn't really sing in a 7.7 at 3100fps.

As far as powders go H4350 is the standby for the Creedmoor chambers. I've used it and Reloder 16 with great success.

None yet but just got 20" rims from a limited and am planning on getting more agresive tires and a lift kit after Christmas. Installing running boards now so i guess its starting .
Either choice you make is a good 1 the only slight issue with the 6 is that like you said a little more exotic=harder to get + higher cost. On the other hand if price is not an issue go for the 6.

I would’ve recommended 6.5 Creed to the OP given he doesn’t reload. Less ammo choices = less of a chance you find something your barrel likes.

.300BLk suppressed kicks ass if it’s purpose is used as intended.
I have 5.56/.308/6.5 suppressed and the .300Blk sub is nothing like the others. I hunt big game with the 6.5 suppressed due to the distance I might need.
If you’re only taking smaller hogs at less than 100 yards, dump 1/4 mag at them with a great big shit-eating grin.
