Do what is specified in the owner's manual.

Unless driving while towing, under heavy loading, or using a car-top carrier, the differential oil is not scheduled to be changed.

The transmissions are "sealed", but the fluid can be replaced. It is not supposed to be replaced until 60,000 ONLY if you are under heavy loading conditions. The manual doesn't have a scheduled transmission fluid change for "normal" operation.

Always refer to the manual when it comes to this stuff - not what the dealer says. Although in this case, he is "sort of" correct.

Good info, thanks! At my 60k service they were wanting to change out power steering and rear differential but I had a feeling it wasn’t necessary yet. Plan on doing the differential myself when the time comes (not sure how you know when it’s time though).

I usually do diffs at 60K intervals. Not sure why, but that is what I do with my vehicles. Sometimes I will change diff if I have a water crossing.

I also do brake fluid and power steering fluid flushes at 3 years. Both hygroscopic fluids, so I try to keep up with those. Those are ones that don't usually get much attention from people in general.

Thanks everyone, for some reason I thought at 30,000 the transmission, differential and transfer case fluids all were to be changed. Guess I mis read somewhere about that.

    Thanks again.

So at 30K, Toyota want's the things done, that we do at every oil change. Only thing I don't do is the re-torgue of the propeller shaft bolt(?). everything else is either done and replaced or checked.

At 37k, I had the dealer do the “driveline service” which is the bottom 4 items on the maintenance schedule. It was about $320. I tow a camper about 2000 miles a year so I’ve decided to do the maintenance early. I’m so busy with work and the kid’s sports that i don’t have the time to do it myself.

So for those of you towing are you guys waiting until 60k for the trans fluid change? I'm at 30k, doing my diffs this weekend. I tow a trailer for work 4-5 days out of the week and my camper about 400-600 miles a month.

If it were me and I was towing that much, I would probably do my transmission earlier. Maybe 30-45K. Depending on how heavy it is.

That's what I'm leaning towards, work trailer varies by load but 1700-4k, campers only about 2400lbs and my car trailer with show truck is 6500lbs. Plus I always haul around a bed full of tools and equipment to.

I do all my maintenance but haven't done one of these sealed Toyota trans fluid changes yet Owned Chevy trucks before this so I'm used to just dropping the pan, most of you tackling this yourself or should it be something I let the dealer handle?

Plenty of detailed write ups and videos for the fluid change. I say just do it yourself.
