Thanks for having a sense of humor. I feel for you a bit. However, since you obviously know what your looking for from reading your posts, you know whom to blame. This sucks no less though.

My max payload with my current additions and me sitting in the truck is about 1100 lbs.

I don't tow much - nothing that is bothersome, and when I do it is only a very light pop-up camper. However, I do haul quite a bit of stuff around in my truck and find myself often wishing I had more payload.

I’m running a similar constant weight. Have you done anything to moderate the springs from stock?

I have been pondering ordering some heavier duty springs from Alcan. But again, I am not sure if I want to go down that rabbit hole. It isn't just springs that makes up payload capability. There are bearings to consider, brakes, etc.

Ha yeah. I’ve kicked myself a bit for this but so far I like the truck and if it keeps me out of the shop that’s a huge win. Last two camping trips we did were 20 miles round trip with a max speed of 50mph. I’ll get the trailer weighed and decide what to do. What part of colorado are you in?

The Tundra is a great truck. My 12’ CM was worked pretty hard, and overall was one of my favorite vehicles.

I would weigh both and see where your at. Also tow with it. See how it feels. The Tundra will not outrun your old EB, especially at elevation. However, you also don’t have to carry walking shoes wherever you go as well.

I’m in Colorado Springs. If your close, and need help with setup, say the word. I promise to make you laugh.

The Equalizer can shift a couple hundred pounds which will help. FWIW I have a 6000 lb TT with a 960 lb tongue weight (high %, but it’s how the trailer is built - I have not added much of anything to the front of the TT). My Equalizer hitch moves 240 lb tongue weight back to the trailer axles. That’s a good thing because I end up 200 lb under GVWR that way.

I regularly wish for 500+ lbs more payload, but every day I’m not towing I love my truck. And I know it will last forever. Your best bet is to weigh your truck and trailer and decide what to do from there. I recommend weighing the truck alone, truck and trailer on ball w/WD bars not hooked up, and together again with full WDH setup. That way you can check that your Equalizer is setup properly.

I was up in springs in February. Will be taking tundra to pagosa and crested butte this summer without trailer. I’m guessing the mpg might suffer a bit at elevation and cranking thru the mountains but taking a minivan wouldn’t be any fun

I have an ‘18 SR5 CM Offroad and my door sticker shows 1265 as well.

It gets weighed fairly often at the dump (no trash service in the boondocks so I haul it myself) and just me with a full tank of gas is 6020. So, with a GVWR of 7200, and assuming these scales are certified and accurate, that would put my payload closer to 1355 when I subtract my 175# ass.

Hit a CAT scale and get her weighed, it’s only $11. I did it once but I was towing a 2200# trailer with a Bobcat on it and wanted to see how well I loaded it.

Great places to be. I go to Pagosa Springs a few times per year. Check out Ouray when down there. If you are there over the 4th of July, it is an amazing place for the family sitting on Main Street, eating home made ice cream and having fireworks go off over your head. Also, plenty of amazing off-roading for you and the family to experience.
    https://www.ouraycolorado.com

Crested Butte is one of my favorite places.
    http://www.visitcrestedbutte.com

I'm also just going to throw this out there, and it may not work for you. I'm ditching my RV'n days and doing something else. The money I put out per year in RV cost, Insurance, Maintenance, and I still can't bring my Jeep with me. It just isn't worth it. I can stay in around 3900 hotels per year to pay for what I spend on 4-8 RV trips per year. Just a thought....I'm getting a 28-32' enclosed gooseneck to haul my junk around, rent cabins or hotels, and on occasion I can stay in my trailer on Jeep trips if need be.

I don’t blame you. The trailer I use is a 2006 crossroads cruiser that’s paid for and sits in a covered barn at my parents place. I’m the only one who uses it and it’s a few times a year. I’m west of Austin and the biggest haul we make is a few hours to port aransas on the coast every 2 years. Otherwise I’ll tow a 20 foot deck boat here and there in the summer. Would be great to live in Colorado. So much outdoors and it’s not hotter than hell all summer

Probably Zach, and adding a few toys to put into the enclosed trailer.

RVs are never cheap, and in most cases are more of a PITA than it’s worth.

Since my girlfriend or wife (can’t remember which I call her this week) said she is done towing and driving the DM, the camper got red lighted.

IIRC the weight of passengers affects your load capacity as well.

Correct. Anything added to the truck including passengers, dog, bikes, coolers, etc figures into the payload which is why I almost always put stuff in the trailer. The payload is an issue but from what I have read the tundra tows much better than other half tons. A 7000lb trailer is big for any half ton IMO. You are gonna get bounced around on smaller roads and will be subject to the 18 wheeler "suck" on the interstate. I am interested to see how the tundra handles it on a test run. The f150 had the payload and the power to handle the trailer but at the end of the day a half ton is a half ton...theres no getting around that with a bigger trailer. If we hauled this thing long distance I would be doing what Coloradotj says and moving to 1 ton.

I sold my boat and Z06 track car so I don't tow anything anymore but this thread may be go check my sticker on the door.

I have a '16 Crewmax SR5 and it says "1240" payload, but 7200 GVWR. I then checked the sticker on my wife's 14 Highlander XLE. 1455 payload. How embarrassing as others have said.

I did a "what if your over payload" thread back in January. Did the same thing as you after much research of everything Tundra...I missed the wimpy payload as well in my research, was just thinking 10k on the tow pkg no probs on payload.

Did a 2600 mile round trip and I was pretty well over loaded in the cab and bed - but did not tow anything.

Toyota looses a lot of sales to Ford over payload issues, and Toyota was the first to adopt the SAE J2807 standard. Go figure? That standard includes five areas of testing: structure, propulsion, thermal, handling, and braking. The structure tests validate body, bumper, and frame strength and the hitch itself. The propulsion tests include: launching five times in five minutes, in forward and reverse, on a (very steep) 12-percent grade; zero to 30, zero-to-60, and 40-60-mph level-road acceleration tests; and minimum speed on the Davis Dam grade.
The thermal test, which is part of the long, grueling Davis Dam gradeability exercise, requires no loss of fluids and no warning alerts that would require customer action--and it must be done at 100 degrees F or hotter. The handling tests require sufficient trailer-sway damping and stability enhancing tow vehicle understeer with weight-carrying and weight-distributing hitch setups. The brake tests specify a maximum stopping distance from 20 mph (from federal regulations) and both uphill and downhill park-brake performance on a 12-percent grade.

When I was towing a 9K TT, I towed with 3/4 ton diesels with payloads of 2K to 3K. Things like tongue weight, passengers and gear was never really an issue. Trucks pulled like freight trains and handled well on downhills and cross winds. Loved the jake brake on the Dodge. Now fast forward to my TRD Pro CM...comfort, reliability and fun to drive. No towing; just bike and kayak transport. It’s now cabin or condo rentals in the mountains.

Problem is that even with "just bike and kayak", or whatever gear - I still am juggling with payload limits regularly with the gear and my family in my CM.

That's the regular cab. The regular cabs have quite a bit more because they are lighter.

will air bags help payload capacity. I read a brand Firestone increases capacity 5000# and they were made specifically for Tundra

Air bags WILL NOT INCREASE PAYLOAD.
Not even by a single ounce.
With air bags you will reduce the rear end squat and improve handling. This can make driving with a heavy load safer and more manageable.
Payload is determined by the axle capacity, drivetrain, and the frame.

This is just stupid. The Tundra is built on a 3/4 ton chassis. Everyone knows Toyota is conservative with their numbers. If it can tow a space shuttle, it can tow just about anything you want.
