    Hey y'all!!

Just picked up an '05 double cab. Currently sitting stock, but has the JBL sound system, TRD exhaust and suspension. I'd like it to be a comfortable daily, but I want more travel and performance off-road.

I had the pleasure of driving this since high school, so these pictures are old, but my parents were nice enough to offer to sell it to me before anyone else so of course I sprang on it. Most pictures I'll post until the build starts are from places I took it (btw, not me in the picture, my little brother is unknowningly modeling for me). Here she is in all her stock glory!
    20160827_194609.jpg

Mod list - a (very) rough and tentative list of ideas

    Audio -
Head unit: The mod I will get done the soonest is adding a new head unit for the sound system. It won't bypass the factory JBL amp, but will feed it more power. Unfortunately, I dont have a lot of time to do it myself, so this will be professionally installed. HOWEVER...
Speakers: I will likely swap out the JBL amp with something better and drop in a sub (JL stealth box maybe, or something custom). Of course, I'll make sure lows bypass the door speakers and the sub handles it. If the powered-up JBL's shine in the mids and highs, then they'll stay. If not, I'll replace those, too. But that's probably a year or two out from this post.

    Aesthetics:
I may pick up a bull bar and rock sliders, mostly for aesthetics. I don't know if anyone besides ARB has airbag-compatible bull bars. If not, I might pass unless I find one that will just sheer off and be useless but at least look good. I'll stick with black everything to go with silver.

    Headlights:
    Assembly: I like Spyder's black assembly.( https://www.autoanything.com/lights/spyder-headlights )
With other black mods, like wheels, sliders, maybe a front grille. Probably kinda gross on its own.
Retrofit: I'll probably try to retrofit projectors someday. For now, the stock lighting, maybe with some help from LED pods or a bar, will suit me just fine.

    Wheels and tires:
I'm gonna pick up the 2018 TRD Pro 4Runner rims. Hopefully I can fit 285/70/17 BFG K02's on those.
    SmartSelectImage_2018-05-16-15-14-16.jpg

    THE BIG ONE:
    Suspension:
Yikes. This is where I need expertise. From what I've read here and various other places, with a proper coilover setup, I can gain a better ride, some handling, but mostly more travel and performance off-road. I'd like factory ride quality (or better) with improved off-road performance. I don't need a long travel kit, but mid-travel or just an increase over stock works.
As I researched coilovers, I started leaning towards ARB's Old Man Emu or Toytech's set, but I'm also considering King ($$$ though). Continuing to research, I discovered I will need new UCA's to take advantage of that travel. What about the lower arms though, or at least the uniballs, should I replace those too? I've also seen people mentioning that new bump stops are a must, is this the case? Will I need limit straps or will that depend on the coilovers I get?
    The rear:
If I lift the front, I'll do the rear (unless I only do 1.5" or less in the front); is an add-a-leaf going to work well? Would I need new shocks in the rear for that to increase travel?

Basically, I want a little more travel with a better ride that is properly done so that no extra wear and tear is placed on the CV's or anything else, but with a little more ride height (unless that makes this all impossible) mostly to level out the front with the rear.

I'll probably call Camburg or someone else to discuss some of this (poor phone operator), but I know some of you are extremely knowledgeable. If it will help, I'd like to keep parts cost at max $2,000, but you can give me ideas of things up to $3,000 if what I want cant be found without spending more.

I put everything I want to do as kind of a roadmap for myself and a hint for y'all of what it may be like. It's nothing fancy but hopefully y'all will enjoy it :)
But the main thing I need help with is the suspension. Thanks y'all!20170717_202228.jpg

Sounds like you have a plan. Best bet is new coil over shocks and new springs in back. Keep the other stuff stock parts until they break. If you start messing with your lift heights etc. then you open up another can of worm$. I fit Michelin LTX ms 285/75/r16 on my 2002 (very slight rub at front) and they are quiet om road with good light offroad performance in sandy conditions. Everything is stock suspension. Considering some new coilovers soon.

From what I've read, upper control arms are necessary to grant that extra travel and to correct camber and caster, but I guess aftermarket coilovers won't affect the latter like spacer lifts would if I keep the ride height stock. Maybe that just gets advertised so theyll sell.

Would changing the bump stops allow for more travel without messing with the height? Or would that strain CV joints and the factory ball joints at full compression?

Thank you for your help!! Good luck with the build :)

Full disclosure I am no expert, but from reading some of these builds posted here it seems as if one mod leads to other problems when it comes to suspension work. I’ve kept my 2002 stock with the exception of larger tires 285/75/r16 (slight rub when in a full slow turn). Those tires gave about a half inch of lift naturally. Never had a problem with my CV joints. It is time, however for some new coilovers. Possibly new springs in the back. Sounds like you’ve given yourself a budget and the tires and shocks are going to give you the best bang for your money.

Are you planning on installing all the suspension components yourself or bringing it to a shop?

Probably a shop. I don't have the tools nor the expertise to do it myself, unless it's a lot simpler than I am aware of. I also need it for work everyday so the less time it spends on a lift the better, and I'd be a little slow ;)

I wish I were doing it myself but oh well

A lift, UCA’s, wheels and tires are gonna set you back way more than 2k. Those 17’s and 285’s will be around that much. Then labor on top of that will rocket you way past 3k.

Didnt mean to include tires and wheels in that cost. I already have those covered. With the cost I meant just suspension parts =)
I'll probably wait on coilovers til I know more. Probably just wheels and tires for now!

I'll let you know about the wheels in a a few weeks. I just bought some of those. LOL. I have 275/70/R17 Cooper ST Maxx tires I'm going to swap on to them. I have 17" wheels now and get no rubbing as it is. If you level or lift a couple inches, I can pretty much guarantee you won't have a problem.

Awesome!! I may do 275/70's if I decide not to mess with suspension yet. Theyll look just fine even if I do!
I'll hopefully order the wheels this weekend. I called a couple Toyota dealers and they're $860, so I'll just go with Ebay and get everything else I need for them separately.

Ebay is the route I went. $700USD + $100 shipping. Looks like the price went up since I bought them...

My 05 already has TPMS sensors so I'll just get the swapped over when I change my tires to the new wheels. Gonna end up a moot point for me though as I intend to disable my TPMS system since air up/down while offroad and in winter and don't like the light on my dash. LOL.

Apparently factory lug nuts work with the Pro SEMA wheels. I have mine from my original wheels, so I'll be using those. My current wheels and lug nuts will be sold together.

I got my TRD wheels for my 4runner off ebay for 780 and free shipping. Just do some shopping around. I just bought the eibach coilover kit and the AAL from toytech and took advantage of their fathers day sale. cost way less than 1k.
