What makes Toyota so reliable? I’m a fanboy but I’m also not blind to the fact that “yota’s” are not problem free, they have their issues too but not as often as the other brands. Do they have better workers? Better machines? Better inspectors? What is it?......

I think it’s better R&D as well as not always changing to a complete new platform before perfecting the first one. If that makes sense.

Toyota has fewer/older features and they are slower to make changes. this allows all the bugs to be worked out. unlike the big 3 auto makers... they are always putting in the latest tech and screwing things up.

    Better testing.

When they invest in a racing series, SCORE, Formula 1, MTEG, etc. they do not hold back. When they were in Formula 1 from '02-'09 they had the biggest budget of all the teams involved. How big? $450 million. A YEAR.

They plan ten years ahead for each new version of each model. Allows them to R&D a lot of the design flaws and bugs years before it is released. Peace. D

    Some stuff
my day job has occasionally taken me into toyota plants. namely the one in san antonio where tundras and tacos are built. i've also been into several ford plants. there are a lot of things stacked in toyota's favor and it's pretty apparent when you watch the operation.

toyota bases everything around "lean" manufacturing. they've developed an entire process for it and every single plant, globally, follows the same rules. here are a couple of videos that explain it.

the other thing they have going for them is that a lot of their 3rd party suppliers have facilities on site next to the plant. toyota then keeps track of their manufacturing. what they build, when they build it, how much energy they use to build the part, etc.

    it's pretty impressive.

When I attended a project management course we reviewed Toyota as a case study. I don't remember all the details, but Toyota perfected a quality control system that is integrated in their overall production system. If I remember correctly it is TPS (Toyota Production System) which includes different production techniques like LEAN / Just-in-time, Jidoka etc. They basically set out a plan to run the most efficient production while attaining the highest standard and quality. Other companies, like the big 3, have not been able to find that balance. They focus more on profit, which exponentially impact quality; the sad thing is that they are okay with their level of quality, because the consumers are okay with it. It is a culture where it is "good enough" if a car breaks every now-and-then. The Japanese have a different value system and a different pride culture that goes with that. There is a lot more to it, but that's it in a nut shell.

Ha, I had the same thought when I was watching the first video And they were talking about implementing fixes to prevent future warranty claims.

The technology in all vehicles is already exceeding what we see today in our vehicles. Have you heard of the super car built by the 16 year old that gets 100mpg and goes 0 to 60 in less then 5 seconds. The technology is there to make all vehicles super efficient. Toyota just makes them a little better at a price that works for them for how much they sell them for. The Tundra today is the most American made truck. Mind blown :headbang:

Samurai sword thats why ... well metallurgy an tolerances as well a dedication to years of R&D before dropping something on lot. Wear parts will always wear , rubber will always break down and mass manufactured parts will always have a few bad ones in the whole batch. Do normal maintenance on Toyota and it will last for ever.

other brands kinda kick the new vehicles to lot don't address any problems , don't test long enough and don't care if it lasts more than two years as long as corporates pockets are lined. Also most other brands still used chiseled rock tools.

Toyota builds in reliability and tests far more than anyone else. Look into when they partnered with bmw for the Supra project.

the z4 will probably be the most reliable bmw ever.

In 1980 my high school friend bought a Datsun 4WD truck and brought it home (he lived with his parents). His father promptly told him to take it back and buy a Toyota as they were built way way better and Datsun (for you youngins that is Nissan) was junk and would give him problems. I never forgot him saying that. He was right then. And Randy's father Frank is still right today.

I bought my 1996 T100 from the 2nd owner and she bought it in 2000 from the original owner. The truck has 272k on it at this time and runs beautifully. I replaced the driver side ball joints a while back because they were shot but the original passenger side ball joints are still tight. Passenger CV joint was shot from spinning for 272k. Boots were still good but the inner side felt like rocks rolling around a jar when you turned it by hand. The AC still works good, power everything still works good, and it's a pleasure to drive. The 5VZFE engine is nice and gets 15 MPG running around town and the forest. I've owned a few 20+ year old domestic trucks and they were all complete pieces of junk by that age. My T100 is what pushed me back to buying a Toyota to replace my Ram.

The truck came with a lot of receipts from the original owner. It appeared he took it in repeatedly for a phantom vibration that was never solved. They even rebuilt the rear axle. The truck still has a squeak and I think I've finally narrowed it down to the front passenger spindle bearing.
