I highly recommend driving the posted speed limits. No need for a radar detector and a bonus=insurance rates don't go up.

Not a good idea in some areas of this great country. An Obama sticker would make that tailgate disappear in a heart beat. On the other hand, Boulder, CO folks would enshrine your tailgate and make it a God. ( not as good as a Prius hatch back with Obama sticker though, it's a "green" car))

I grew up in a small town above a funeral home. We parked our cars in the large pass-through driveway behind the FH, never locked, windows down during good weather. It wasn't until my car got broken into in college that I started locking the doors. Of course by "breaking into" I mean I had left the windows down in front of my apartment and someone stole my backpack from it.

Nobody messed with the FH. Thieves were too scared of what might get them. Good times.

I remember one Halloween the FH doorbell rang. I went downstairs and opened the door. A fellow HS student almost died on the front porch because he couldn't believe someone answered the door. I didn't bother to turn the light on before I did :)

Ditto... I grew up in a small town and never had a prob. One early morning the cops showed up at my front door to tell me my car had been stolen, nope it's right there! Yah well they brought it back... ok, whats your point? Press charges? my $40K pride and joy is in the garage, you want me to press charges over a couple kids going on a joy ride in my $1500 beater car? Ain't happening! LOL

Not everybody lives in a small town. I lived in a small town in Oregon. You would be surprised how many "small town" crimes are never officially reported. (Reported by Who?) That 30+ year small town mayor who's a drinking buddy with the small town newspaper owner, (that's assuming there is a newspaper)makes sure the small town is crime free. Just sayin...........

I understand what your saying... but why give a couple 14-15 y/o boys a criminal record for going on a joy ride and being boys? Just sayin... LOL
One went to college and the other is playing Pro Baseball. I see them occasionally when they come home for the holidays, I shake their hand and we smile. That's what a small town community is all about!

You are correct. You can get away with a lot in a small town. Two of my best friends in high school both became LEOs. Sheriff and State Trooper. We did a lot of crazy stuff. Don't ask. heh heh.

Yeah I've seen this work very well with just the simple hose clamp. Thieves around here bolt at the first sign of security devices. Sadly too many other targets for them to worry about getting caught.

The hose clamp idea is a great one.
Make a crook do a few seconds of work and they probably won't.
If not a lazy loser, they would have a good job, and not be stealing.
The screwless type is extra sweet!

Not the cheapest option but I bought the
pop and lock tailgate lock, that locks with the rest of the doors when you hit the alarm on/off. Had it installed almost a year now now problems so far image.jpg

The auto lock is nice, I still think security comes in layers. If they get past the handle, then you have a second mechanism that adds more time. I have three on my truck so it will take time. They will take the truck before my tailgate. :)

I don't think AMRE is referring to living in a wealthy suburban area - I think he means he lives in a rural community and knows his neighbors. I used to be in this situation too and I miss it. There aren't many people passing through, your closest neighbor is a mile away, and you know (at varying levels, anyway) pretty much anyone who resides within 50 miles in any direction.

That kind of "nice" area I can see not locking up, although I feel it's prudent to do so anyway. Better safe than sorry.

The kind of "nice" where everyone around you has a big house, RV, and boat is a different thing. The gate that's supposed to keep people out has a second function as a huge neon sign that says "COME STEAL OUR SHIT." If you live here, definitely lock up.

I am currently building a house in a really nice area too - I'm actually more worried about moving to that corner of Suburbia than I was in my old neighborhood that was pretty middle-middle class.

Thanks for the post, @csuviper - I've been considering getting the lock that ties into the vehicle's automatic locks, but need to slow my spending for a bit as we transition into the new place (going to be spending a fortune on a fence, blinds, landscaping, and all the other little odds and ends within 3 months).

Sorry to interrupt the conversation. Just a dumb question here. If I decide to have the tail lock option, just one will be enough to secure the gate?

The tailgate has to be in a certain position to lift it out and both sides have to pop out at the same time. With that being said I believe one would do the trick.

If your tailgate is always locked the. You are very much less likely to get the tailgate stolen. Just hard to make sure it’s locked all the time.

My tailgate was stolen about 5 yrs ago on Halloween night and .....i was like who the hell would want to steal a tailgate until I found out that it's worth 2500.00 for the original from dealer so I ended up doing an insurance job....i never thought they were so expensive....when I gotta new installed I always lock it with my key and also bought the side master lock for the hinge

Criminals are everywhere. I live in a gated community where crime is nearly zero, but I would never leave a key in a vehicle for one reason. If someone stole it and fled police and hurt a cop or another motorist I'd never forgive myself. It's why it's against the law to leave a vehicle running in public unattended. My 2¢

No judgment just my opinion after 28 years in LE here in norcal. Sharks hunt where prey is plentiful.
