It seems like a defect. Doesnt the law work where you try to get the same issue fixed 3 times you can exchange or return? Or how does it work?

If it isnt a defect, why do some do it and some dont?

    Appreciate any advice... Thanks.

It has to be replicated after numerous fixings. Varies per state too, I believe.

For example, in CO the Lemon Law states

“Colorado's Lemon Law (a.k.a. Warranties Act) comes into play when a new car, truck, or van under warranty has some sort of recurring malfunction that hinders the vehicle's function and skews its value more than normal appreciation loss.

NOTE: Motorcycles and motorhomes are not included in the Colorado lemon law. Additionally, minor defects and damages caused by neglect, misuse and alterations are not covered in the lemon law.

If, within 1 year of purchasing the vehicle, every valiant effort has been made to fix the defect (and it has to be the same defect) the buyer may be able to apply the Lemon Law. Colorado statute defines "a reasonable number of attempts" as 4 attempts or a total of 30 days (not consecutive) in a shop within 1 year.”

I think it’s the ABS brake test. There’s another thread here about it. Seems like almost everyone has it.

well I guess if you consider a normal operation a defect, maybe sell the truck and go get something else besides a Toyota. you would hate to hear the Tacoma, 4runner doing a random cycle of the air injection system during the night. wouldn't believe how many posts you see on the Tacoma world and T4R.org forums asking what is this noise during the night when the vehicle is in the garage, and its noted in the owners manual as a normal operation.

    :)

LOL, the first time I heard my Tacoma do that I thought it was priming to explode!

I knew there was something to the clunk. My 2017 didn't have it, or I didn't hear it. My 2018 has it for sure. Getting a louder exhaust so that will fix it...

2018 has safety sense 2017 does not. They say its an ABS check but most likely its the auto braking checking itself for the TSS.

When i first got my truck i freaked out also but now i dont even notice it anymore

Mine does it first start only. Just a slight clunk, not a jolt. My 06 Tacoma had it all 10 Years that I owned it. Its nothing and is considered normal. No need to panic!

It's most likely that the people reporting it not happening, just haven't heard it. If you have your doors set to lock at speed, it happens at the exact same time and you won't notice it because all you hear and feel is all the doors locking. I had the doors locking at shift to drive, and noticed the clunk. I changed them back to lock at speed and the mysterious clunk "disappeared" into the background.

Mine is a little different. I get it when I back out of my driveway and put it into D, then it "clunks" when I begin to roll forward. But only if I don't let the truck warm up. For instance in the winter I would go out and start the truck and go back in for about 15-20 minutes, it didn't do it then.

I have an 18 Platinum with about 3,200 miles and hear the same noise - have since day 1. Took it in to the dealer around 300 miles (prior to any mods) and they also said it was the ABS doing a self check. Only happens one time after startup and driving about 50 feet. If the truck stays running and I get out and get back in and start driving again it doesn’t happen.

So...mine has a clunk right at start while still in park. Only does it on the first start up of the day. Clunks almost simultaneously with the engine starting.

Have about 400 Miles on It and only recently noticed it in the last 100 Miles or so.

It’s normal. No biggie. You’ll get used to it. The manual tells you so. I read mine.... most of it.

So I made 3 recordings of the clunk sound at start up and took it to the dealer this morning. Master tech watched the videos and they sent me on my way in a 2018 Highlander while they try and figure it out. It only does it after it has been sitting and only on the first start up. Once it’s warm it does not do it. Master tech dude thinks it might be the starter not disengaging all the way.

3rd Tundra and have 450 Miles on it.

Hopefully it is just a defective starter!

I will update when they figure it out.

Mine does this as well. Took wife's 4runner for oil change and test drove another 18 Tundra and made same noise right at 6mph. Curious to see what your mechanic says

Dealer called and said they were not able to replicate the clunk sound. Picked up my truck this morning and after several starts it has not made the clunk sound. Dealer was more than accommodating and seemed very much interested in resolving the problem.

Guess it is just maybe part of the break in process?

Same issue from the start. Now have 57,000 miles. Dealer couldn't find any issue.

Clunk is getting worse, does it at almost every start up. Been recording it with my phone. This morning it did it twice during starting.

Called toyota and the field service dude is supposed to be calling me back before 12pm tomorrow. Truck has 602 Miles on it now.

The Toyota people were helpful and seem like they want to do whatever it takes to fix the problem.

wife and I each bought a '18 tundra, both of them have done the same rolling clunk after each start up since day one. had a Toyota tech sit with me while I replicated it for him. he has no idea what it is and wants to hook up a bunch of wireless mic's all over the truck to track it down. after reading this thread, seems to be that I would be wasting mine and their time huh?

I've not noticed a "clunk" on startup, but if I hear one, at least I will know what it is.

I was just out driving my truck and I think I can hear the same noise people are talking about here. It's very subtle. I honestly wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't read this thread. I'm certainly not going to worry about it.

I thought I developed the clunk noise the other day. Found my pistol was rocking back and forth in the console vault. Added more padding.

After mine being at the dealer for a week, Toyota field tech being involved, service dude starting every new tundra on the lot, they found 2 that made the same clank/clunk at start up. The common denominator was trd dual exhaust.

Field tech stated if has something to do with a change in the trd exhaust.
This is my third tundra with trd dual exhaust but first that did not come with it from the factory. The noise started at around 300 Miles when I had the exhaust put on.

They assured me it is causing no damage and is something they have only had one other complaint on involving another 2018 with trd dual exhaust.

The truck runs and drives perfectly otherwise and only makes the sound when it has been sitting for an hour or two.

Not the outcome I wanted as I wanted the sound fixed but it’s all documented and I still love the truck.
