I have a 2014 Crew Max 4X4 w/ ~ 125K miles. It needed an oil change and my wife agreed to take it in for me, so I drove her car to work. I left here with a spare key I had made at Home Depot but never tested. I've since read all of the threads about programming keys. Truck wouldn't start and she says it sounds like its out of gas. Our 2008 Sequoia had a fuel pump go out at about the same mileage, so I figure that's it and have it towed to a shop recommended by a dealer buddy of mine.

This is Thursday. They call later that day to tell me that they tested the fuel pump and it's fine, but the fuel density sensor is reading 25% alcohol, so they need to do an update and re-calibrate. That's completed but still no start.

Friday was pretty much a wash. I called several times to get an update, but there wasn't one. I chalked it up to them not having the time to look at it again, and hoping that they hadn't spent several hours without finding a problem.

Monday comes and I get a call pretty early. Cam shaft sensor error. It's replaced by 3pm but now they tell my wife they're getting a key error message. I run my key up there, but can't get the truck until the next day.

Tuesday they say all is well, just don't use that spare key any more.

What's the chance that it was just the key the entire time and I have some $600 fresh diagnostics that I probably didn't need?

A little of this and a little of that.
Is this a dealership that you’ve used in the past and trust? It may have been but my dealership wouldn’t perform any unnecessary work either. Let’s hope not......

9 out of 10 times when you have a strange issue with a vehicle, it's always the last thing you changed/fixed. This time being the key you never tested after having it cut. I guess the question is why did you give her the spare key and not the key you use all the time?
Just curious, I am always cognizant of when I/or things change, but that's just me.

3” lift, black step bars, aftermarket wheels, LT305/55R20 was this way when I brought it.
You are going to hate my answer it is the key, I daughter boyfriend got a key made a Home Depot for his 2010 Tundra and it works fine. (Home depot, Lowe’s and Walmart) all sell Hillman key with transponders. But they only work through 2010, my is 2015 for some reason they don’t work in newer trucks and don’t offer the key for tundra past 1010.

This is a local shop with a Good rep that was recommended by a buddy whi is a local dealer. I’ve had them work on previous trucks (Tacoma) with good results. I’ll chalk it up to hard to diagnose and a lesson learned, but I’m pretty sure it was just the key.

Honestly, the answer is pretty petty. She has two keys to her Euro wagon, but will not leave one on the key rack, so every time I need to drive her car I have to ask her for a key. It gets old. So I made her a spare so that wouldn’t have to give her my key and FOB. Now, if that’s not some $600 karma for ya.

Damn! Hard lesson right there brother! At least you have a key rack. If/when I need to drive my wife’s SUV I have to hunt her down then (she never knows where her key is at) hunt down the actual key, lol.
