I grew up with automatic Mercedes cars - my first auto experience, and we had several of those over about 15 years, so I have never even thought about that as an issue. It has a similar zig-zag pattern as the Tundra.

it was a safety issue I think. it was too easy to accidentally to put it into reverse or a lower gear in the old days (when all the gears were inline). since they went to this stair stepped format it seems people were less inclined to bump it from neutral into reverse or drive to 1st/L.

now that transmissions went electronic somewhat between the selector and engagement, you can somewhat program out inadvertent engagement of reverse at extreme speed differential from forward to reverse or dropping it into lower gear by accident.

cant really find any concrete info on this change.

I am not sure how you can possibly miss the D position? I don't even have to look, just move the shifter a bit to the right (from P) and pull it staright back until it stops and it is in D. Never missed, besides that there is an indicator in the instrument cluster.

I’m opposite. I cannot stand column shifters, but don’t mind a couple wiggles of my shifter to get it in gear.

Same, I find it to be a waste of space in terms of leg room and third seat.
