I’ve owned many of the calibers listed. I have extensive experience with 22-250, 30-06, 300 Winchester, 300 Weatherby, 30-378 Weatherby, 7mm-08, 7mm Remington Mag, 270 Winchester, 6.5X284, 338 Lupua, 375 H&H Magnum to name a few. All of the cartridges will kill if shot placement is good and the correct bullet construction is used. My advice is simply to use the largest cartridge you can shoot accurately and afford. Saying that, I personally have had very consistent and impressive results using a 375 H&H magnum on shots 200 yards and in and a few longer. As far as long Range goes without scope adjustment I really liked the Weatherbys for 500 yards and in using holdover. For extreme long range 1600 yards and in I use a 338 Lupua and Nightforce optics.

.270 would be good for you down there. Up here in Alaska, it's on the weaker side for some animals, but I'll be taking a .270 on a caribou hunt this fall to lend out to members of my group (youth). If I was going with a group of friends I would just take the .270 myself. I'll be backing them with an overkill .300 Win Mag, but that's also in case we see a grizzly bear and want to take it too...

Overall the 270 is a very good cartridge.

With my current load, my 300 grain bullet goes subsonic between 1600 and 1700 yards. After that bullet stabilization becomes an issue. There are some new bullets on the market now that are substantionally lighter with higher ballistic coefficients I could squeeze another 400 yards out of but I want to use up what I have now before moving on.

Best comment! If you only have one hunting rifle, make sure you can find ammo at any local Wal-Mart or Mom&Pop hardware store. I agree that there are many different calibers and many different platforms, but if you have to choose one, go with one that you can find ammo anywhere.

With some fine tuning using hand loads you can get that drop below 6 inches. Depending where you zero it in makes a huge difference. The 06 still has plenty of kill energy at 300yds. There are lots of articles on improving the 06 trajectory. Barrel quality and length are two critical areas that are easily dealt with.

There’s one specific rifle I’ve been watching over the years but haven’t purchased yet that I feel could be the ultimate over the counter whoop ass rifle if one is not recoil/concussion sensitive. The Savage 110 long Range Hunter in 338 Lapua. They also offer it in several other go to calibers. It has been my experience that Savage has got their stuff together now. Both my Savage rifles in 338 shoot one hole.

The first Savage 338 Lupua I purchased was the 110 BA. It was a one hole shooter but I found it a chore to carry on long hikes and shooting off hand was more or less out of the question. I then migrated to the 110 FCP after selling the 110 BA to an active sniper in Fallujah. He told me the BA is what some where using on active duty. I found the FCP substantially more shooter friendly but still a tad heavy for carrying all day and shooting off hand. The Long Range Hunter just might be the ticket.

Maybe I forgot to mention the 338 is perhaps the best all around cartridge for stateside game. The 338 can capsize a large grizzly or pole axe a whitetail. There’s no such thing as to dead.

I can believe that. The 338 Lapua is well beyond "exotic" now. Becoming popular quite fast. Lots of great articles in all the hunting/shooting mags over the last several years. My local Bass Pro has a hard time keeping 338 Lapua ammo in stock. A very good sign!!

I would never get a 270 simply because most of the deer I have tracked and not found were shot by someone with a 270. Maybe the shot placement was off but some left good trails for a while. First choice for less than a 30 caliber would be a Weatherby 257 mag, then a 7mm. If not a mag then a 25-06. I know people that hunt in WV with the 25-06 and swear by it. When I hunted up there it with a 30-06 loaded with 180s. In Tx I shoot 150s. Tried 135s for a while but prefer the 150s.

These are both 338 lapua Mags. The closest one is mine and the back is my buddies. He and his son are the gunsmiths who built them. Full customs, both on Stiller actions. Most of my guns are heavy barreled long range/Varmint guns=heavy.

But for hunting deer I got a Ruger American 270, light weight easer to pack in the Oregon Coastal brush, and a great preformer.

I haven't gun hunted in 10 years, i am a bow hunting freak, that is all i care about hunting with.
Back in the day, i dropped a pile of deer with a 300 Weatherby Accumark, i still have it but all it does is collect dust.
I just enjoy the challenge of the bow way more than using a gun.

You really can't go wrong with 30-06, 308, or 270. They are available at almost any store that sells ammo and you can get just about any gun you want in one or all of those calibers. There are a lot of people having success with 7mm08 and 243 as well. I shoot a 30-06 but would feel comfortable with any of the aforementioned calibers. That being said I do most of my hunting with a 12ga and a couple dogs.

I love my .300 win mag. More readily available and still good for half a mile shots. Although I only get to shoot 300 around here.

.308 or .30-06. Personally, I also have a Ruger American .308 SS Compact (I like going through the thick shit) with Leupold VX-R. I choose .308 based upon versatility and availability of ammunition. I also wanted it capable of moose, and low and behold, I won a tag a couple of years later. It served me well.

.300 Win Mag or more is overkill for whitetail and can waste a lot of meat.

I wanted the same thing. After a bunch of friend suggestions and reading I ended up w 30-06. 125gr up to 220gr factory loads for just about any situation. The also make match target ammo for the range.
