The Long Travel guys have to run extended tie rods to make up the new distance to the spindle. Those are usually included in the LT kit.

Us Mid Travel guys don't have that issue. Our shafts are shorter, but that just means we try harder.

I may not hit rock bottom, but I'll scrape the hell out of the sides trying.

Ok so let me see if I can provide some clarity here

By steering kit do you mean something like the heim tie rods available through coach builder?

If so here is the skinny on those. They are not needed on street trucks, they do add a level of adjustment ability some may need to get proper alignments and have smoother movement off road and on compared to stock style tie rods. However they are not needed even on 16"+ of travel on long travel trucks. Some of us (myself and others) added the Heim'd tie rods over stock for added strength and less chance of binding.

But if you ask @osidepunker he runs the piss out of his truck with stock tierods and 0 issues. Toyota has incredible tie rods very strong and work great, there is no need for upgrading.

Now in referance to the rest of the steering components, a good upgrade is urethane mounts for steering rack, however that is a big job to do, and isnt needed if not doing hard off roading and if the stock ones haven't failed yet.

So no one should consider upgrading steering components unless a few conditions exist:

Binding due to odd alignment #'s with some bracket lifts.
Run out of adjustment due to some odd issue with trucks alignment
You have $ burning a hole in your pocket to upgrade something else on the truck
You are smashing you truck hard enough off road you either bend or worry about tie rod strength (I seriously doubt this is happening to anyone)

this all comes from experience with a few different lifts on these trucks as well as years of wheeling and wrenching. But hey its the internet so dont believe everything you read.

    This ^^
I have logged many seriously hard dirt miles and I have taken lots of hits that I thought would yard sale The Truck. Stock steering is strong enough.

My rubber rack bushings are getting pretty loose. I have a poly replacement kit sitting in the garage, but doing the work is not easy

The tie rod joint is more prone to failure than the actual arm.

Funny the stuff people spend money on that's not needed just because they want to add a mod. I was the first to make ABS shields but i only run them in the rear - the front aren't really needed unless you do lots of dumb stuff.

who wheels in the snow or deep mud? If your buried to the axle you aren't moving so nothing to hit them. 8yrs and my fronts are still working - not even a mark on them.

Some overland group I used to follow did a cross canada trip. they were on regular roads, but lots of snow and they lost two sensors on two different tundras. I just did all four since I was making them

You do not need to upgrade the steering kit for a 3-4" lift. I had mine at 3.5" for a while and now back down closer to 3" with no issues to those components.

I highly recommend the @sdhq_offroad ABS sensor guards. Simple install and good protection for a sensitive expensive device.
