That's how mine started out, especially after towing my trailer. I would get home and could smell a burnt smell, thought to myself no way it can be my 21k mile truck. 2weeks later I'm rotating my tires and found my leak on the passenger side dripping onto my exhaust manifold.

It's kind of hard to tell from those pics, but it might look a little weepy towards the rear...

Hmm, if it is seeping it doesn't look too serious in the pic. If you wipe it with your finger is there any oil?

    That's what I'm seeing.
Why does Toyota have such a hard time keeping the 5.7 sealed up? I have seen cam tower, valve cover, timing cover and rear main seal issues.

My 2007 tundra had 160k miles with no issues when I traded it. Never even heard of the issue until I started smelling burnt oil occasionally .

Here’s the Toyota good stuff; not cheap, $15 a tube. Had my oil analyzed at first 1K miles and it showed a lot of silicone in the factory oil.

It's not really "common" on the 2018s, but the 2018s haven't been out that long. I believe a few people here have had the leak on the '18s, so it appears Toyota still hasn't addressed the issue at manufacturing.

Its hit or miss with the tower leak, pretty much roll the dice on it.

I got myself all worked up worrying about it for a few weeks, but I've since shifted to more of a "que sera sera" attitude towards it. Every other half-ton pickup has a lot more issues than this, and it seems like once it's fixed then it's fixed for good. While it's definitely a concern, it's not enough for me to want to actually get something else. Good luck in your search and let us know what you end up with either way!

Edit: Here's a poll I started to see how many people have had the issue. It's of course not very "scientific" but it might give you sort of an idea on how common it is:

2012 Tundra RW. 55,643 miles. Tower just started to leak. Talked to Toyota dealership and a Toyota America. The lady on the phone with the dealership advised me that there was nothing that could be done, and she wished me good luck with my vehicle....
Toyota America states that there are no known issues, nor any record of any problems on their end with the engines. Take it to my local dealership and they will gladly diagnose the problem and fix it for me, but Toyota can offer me no assistance with the issues I am having.
    WTF Toyota....

That's pretty ridiculous that they won't even acknowledge it's not an uncommon issue.

If they admit its a problem then they have to own up to it and fix the issue. My guess is the 5.7 will not carryover to the next gen Tundra and that's there fix and they are just buying time until then.

I am thoroughly frustrated and disappointed. Not one person affiliated with Toyota is willing to do a thing to help. Toyota America told me they could look up my VIN and see there could not be an issue with my truck...???
What in the holy hell does that mean?!
I am looking at it right now lady! I’ll send you a damn picture!
A diagnostic fee to tell me what I already know and then they will happily fix it for me at the going shop rate, by the hours quoted for the job....
Completely unbelievable. They know there is an issue. A dealership mechanic told me there was an issue. Thousands of people have had the same issue. Yet, my VIN number says there is no issue....

I own a 4 runner and according to a couple of folks on that forum (Toyota techs/service writers) Toyota has started looking hard at all warrantee claims across the board. It was only a matter of time before this issue started costing them more than expected. First cut hours and then deny completely.

I still want a Tundra..... but will wait this out as long as I can. Hopefully you can find another dealer to treat you right.

Are they not helping because your warranty has expired?

The original factory warranty is expired due to time, but the extended warranty is in place. They say it does not cover oil leaks?? Somehow, this is going to come back on me and I’m going to be out thousands of dollars.
I’ve been to both of my local dealerships and getting the same answers. Called Toyota America again today to argue further and not getting anywhere. Granted it is a small leak, but they grow and I don’t want it leaking.
If it comes down to it, I guess I will be calling on the wisdom of the group here, because we will be tearing into the job ourselves in the shop. I’m not paying Toyota shop prices to fix it.
