Anyone running 17" rims on your 2.5 gen?

Am I crazy for thinking of going down to a 17" rim? The main reason I'm considering it is because the rims I want (Fuel Beast) come in a +20 offset in the 18" variant, which I'm concerned I'll need fender flares with. The 17s come with a +35 offset, which I think will tuck in a bit better. I'll probably go with some 285/70s for tires. I'm going to keep stock suspension for a while as well, and the most lift I'll ever go with would be 6112s at 1.9".

Anyway, is anyone running 17s? If so, pics?

Not crazy at all! I contemplated the same exact setup as you’re thinking - same tire size and ride height, too. In fact, I sometimes regret not following through. Instead, I “cheaped out” on a great deal on some 18” rims and went that route.

But yes, I prefer a smaller rim, preferably 17”, than what appears to be the more popular and bigger 20” sized rim. I’d rather have more tire cushion for off-roading than a thinner profile tire. But the brakes on our trucks are so big, it’s hard to fit 17” rims; hence, the relatively small selection of rims available in that size.

 

I agree. I definitely wouldn't consider 20" rims. I've always been a fan of smaller rims and bigger tires, plus I'd save a bunch of money on new tires. I just can't find any pics of these rims on Tundras in the 17" so I'm wondering if they'd look too small.

 

I've got 20's, not the biggest fan of 20's, but my opinion, that size looks the best on the 3rd gens. Not trying to piss anyone off, but I think 17's do look too small on the 3rd gens, just my worthless .02.

 

They don’t look too small to me, but that’s more of a subjective factor. Toyota’s 3rd gen Baja Tundra ran OE 17” “Rock Warrior” wheels on 37s, and that setup looked fine to me. If you do a google image search for the Tundra Baja truck, that may give you a bit more perspective. I suppose you could try a google image search for regular Tundras on 17” wheels and see what comes up. I do know I’ve seen pics of them here and on tundratalk, too, but they’re not as common.

 

I went with 17s for more off-road protection. Wheels are 17x8.5 0offset, tires are 295/70/17. Stock suspension.

Dood! badass looking truck, I want those P&P sliders(Im assuming theyre P&P) but I hear it takes a while from order date to your house, whats your take? I like methods i might get titanium vex

 

Thanks! They are p&p sliders. My front bumper took almost 3 months to get to me. The sliders took 4 weeks from purchase date to my front door. So in comparison it wasn't too bad of a wait.

SDHQ had several 17" wheels in store, including methods I think. They'd probably be a willing source of info.

 

I already had the nfab bumper before I got the wheel and tire combo so I'm not sure if this setup would rub on the stock bumper.

Also, I have the front mudflaps removed. This setup rubs the mudflaps at full lock.

So far I'm seeing 2mpg difference but my daily commute has changed a little since getting the wheels. I typically do about 90% hwy and 10% city but currently my hwy commute involves a lot of traffic jams.

 

@ThundraSr5, got any front/rear pics? Thinking about doing the same rim and tire size on my '10 with Billsteins at highest setting and 2" block in rear until I can get CB shackles for the rear. Would like to keep treads close to flush without flares.

Check out the Icon Six Speed wheels. Those will be my next wheels for sure, I love 17’s.
The Icon’s made those wheels to fit around the Tundra’s big brakes.

Those are perfect @ThundraSr5! They stick out about what I calculated then to, but knowing the numbers and then seeing brings it in to perspective. How much clearance between UCA's? Looks like I would need +30's to get most of the tread back under fender. Not completely opposed though.

So you didn' have to do a CMC? Thought for sure with 0 offset you'd have to or did I miss that somewhere.

Only thing holding me up now with going with a 295 wide tire (with a 35mm back spacing wheel) is if it will give me to much tire on the road for snow/slush. Living in Maine can be a PITA. My grabbers at2's were awesome in snow until I had less then 3/8 of total tread depth left. If I could get the grabbers in a 295/70/17 to fall back on I'd go with the 17's.

Aarrrrggghhhhh, why does this have to be so difficult.

 

I couldn't find anyone else with my specs so I compared it to a bunch of people with similar overall dimensions. In the end I was prepared to do cmc if it came down to it. Luckily I didn't have to. I have an aftermarket bumper, the front back mudflaps removed, stock suspension and stock alignment. I daily my truck and I've taken it through some light offroad trails and have not experienced any rubbing yet.

I love the 17 look here! I wanted to find a nice used set of 17s, but could not locate one. So went with the 18s. Looks great

 

Next time I get new wheels and tires on my 3rd gen which is probably going to be soon, I will be going with 17".
