So my baby has developed an exhaust leak. I have exhaust coming up between the bed and cab as much as out the tail pipe. The truck also has a pretty loud drone now. I'm planning to take it into the shop in the next couple weeks, but I want to do a bit of research on set ups first.

Truck is a 2005 double cab. My biggest criteria for an aftermarket exhaust isn't really typical sice I hate loud exhausts. I don't want any drone, and I don't want to hear it in the cab.

I often spend hours at a time behind the wheel and I find a constant drone at 1500 - 2300RPM to be annoying and tiresome. At the same time, I don't want to restrict airflow and reduce my performance. Not being an auto performance expert, I'm not certain if it's possible to reduce noise with out sacrificing performance.

I've done some searching online and the only stuff I can come up with is people looking to increase the drone and noise from their exhausts. Surely there's a quieter option.

    Any suggestions?

See what @dirtydeeds has to say. He has worked with Tundras for a long time I’m sure he has some solid advice.

Looks like stock is the way to go I guess.

I read somewhere that an 18" oval Magnaflow muffler might work too. Any opinions on that one?

On my previous '02, I ordered OEM from rock auto. It was a perfect fit. No drone either.

Bumping this back up so I don't have to start a new thread.

I've determined my problem is a hole in my muffler. I have the truck booked in on Tuesday to have the work done, but after doing a little bit of price checking online it looks like the parts are pretty cheap and the job doesn't look overly difficult.

I'd like to avoid welding if I can (even though I'm a jman welder, I don't have access to a place to do personal welding work at this point).

Has anyone ever replaced their exhaust themselves? Any tips and tricks since I'll be doing this in a parking stall with a jack and jackstands? Should I replace only the muffler or should I replace most/all of the exhaust while I'm at it?

I'm pretty sure this is the part I need to replace the muffler. Looks like it just clamps/bolts into place.

There's also the resonator assembly, which I'm debatng on just replacing while I'm under there.

Some Mods :) See build thread for details
Dirty dead’s ba muffler 10” or larger with hemoltz resonator might be a good choice. No drone.

Sawzall cut then clamp new muffler on is easiest. If you can weld then go for it.

If you don’t want to weld it you will have to cut the old one out if not replacing from flange to flange. They make extension pipes that they sell at the auto parts store and you can use some clamps to extend to where you cut the pipe.

The Walker exhaust factory replacement is complete from the flange to the tail pipe. You cut the old clamp off toss out the gasket and old muffler/tailpipe and install the new with a new clamp and gasket.

Good stuff, thanks guys. I'll slide under there this weekend and see what's involved with going flange to flange. I'm hoping to get this done for under $500 CDN pesos if possible. Paying a shop to do it may end up costing more than that.

If I end up having to weld it, I guess that's what it'll come to. I hate welding... LOL
