The VLEDs are well built; it’s a metal housing.

The lights are attached using 3M double sided tape. For the picture i just put the lights in the opening. I didn’t peel off any of the backing for the tape and it stayed in place, even for the couple hundred yard drive from where I took the picture and my house.

There is a very small amount of friction of the light fitting into the housing. That could be a good thing to help keep it in place with the tape. The added weight of the metal housing might offset that benefit though.

I’ll proably install them today with the tape.

Let me know if you have any questions or want me to take any more photos.

Still sketchy on having them attach upside down with just tape. It’s a lot of investment just hanging in there lol. Do you feel comfortable that it won’t pop out even when off roading?

I took some measurements and weights for comparisons.

    Old LED lights = 18grams
    VLEDs = 27grams

The widest part on the bottom of the VLED light is 6.68mm. The thinest part is 2.38.

I did my best to measure the lip on the bottom of the mirror where the tape would stick to. The widest part is 4.60mm. The sides are about 2.18mm and the thinest part is 1.60mm. Not a lot of area for the light to stick to.

I still plan on using them; they are already paid for. By the time I ship them back and pay the restocking fee, I would only get $40ish back.

    We’ll see what happens.

I ordered a pair of the generic fit VLEDS for my SR5. Is there enough of the back side of the light sticking though that a small bead of JB quickweld could be used on the back to help hold them in?

If you’re asking about the ones I have, maybe.

The universal ones look like they have a wider lip with more 3M tape. They will proably stick better. Downside is they won’t be flush like the OE ones unless your router out a lip.

If I ever get tow mirrors I’ll buy the universal ones and mount them to the bottom.

That’s what I’m comparing the VLEDs to.

Not sure why everyone is so concerned about the tape. If properly prepped and applied you'll need a screwdriver to get them back out. MMichaelJJ, have you installed them yet?

I installed the generic VLED's this weekend in my SR5. The lights do not protrude very far into the inside of the mirror housing so I didn't apply any JB Weld to the inside. Instead I used some 3M adhesion promoter before attaching them. I'm loving the light output and they fit perfectly

Installed them yesterday. Cleaned the surface and applied some heat since it was a little cold out. I think they’ll be fine.

@thomasbus337 Looks awesome! Was it hard to run the wires?

@MMichaelJJ Nice! Good idea adding some heat when it's cold out.

I used a long zip tie to help snake the wiring through the mirror housing, very easy. Then I inserted a large drinking straw through the rubber boot on the door harness and fed the wiring through the straw into the cab of the truck. I already had the OEM LED bed lighting kit installed so I just hooked these new lights into that wiring. With it wired up this way I can turn them on with the cargo light switch with the doors closed, or override them with the same switch

I purchased the same set and got them mounted and they look great! I tried tapping into the harness under the driver side(I think same as you, where the oem bed light set would be tapped into, but I don't have the bed light set) but I got nothing. What wires did you tap into?

I tapped into the power and ground wires on the harness that came with the oem style LED bed lights. I didn't want to hack further into the wiring under the dash.

Thanks for the reply! I figured it out this morning. I grounded straight to the ground screw and then ran the power to the driver side door well. I read in another thread that for the 2018 CM the cargo light wire is pink. There's probably 5 pink to pinkish wires in there. There's one that is the thinnest it isn't that one then 2 more the next gauge up, they are very similar in color it is one of those, if i remeber correctly it is the slightly darker wire.

I put in the $20 eBay puddle lights tonight. Not a great fit, I used some hot glue to secure them tightly. They seem brighter than OEM. Thanks @BlueBottle For the idea and write up!

You need to change the whole light pod, not just the bulb.

More than I wanna spend on them but yeah they look hella good on quality. Either way I’ll have to route wiring and drill a hole.

Exactly why if your going to all that trouble you might as well get quality lights.
