Looking to spend some time in the San Rafel Swell & Dirty Devil River area first week of April. I've spent a lot of time in the Swell but lm hoping to explore east of 24. Wondering if anyone has driven the Poison Spring Canyon Rd lately. I want to take my camper to the river. It's a pop up with fairly high clearance. I'm used to pulling it down pretty rough roads.. I'll get a road report in Hanksville but I'm trying to plan my time before I roll out.

I know @KevinK has taken his Tundra in that way in the past. Not sure how recent though. I went down to Maze overlook last summer via Hans Flat/Flint Trail.

I’ll be down there this spring, but not till late April.

We were out that way last year but never made it that far. Hopefully soon we will get back out there to explore the area.

We drove to the spring from 95 back in July (from west to east as I’m sure you know if you’re familiar with the area). If you have an offroad trailer you should be fine. I don’t recall anything super technical between the road and the spring itself.

I don’t know what the weather may have done to the trail over the winter though.

I assume your trailer is like this

    And not like this

If you cross the spring (supposing it’s crossable when you get there) and head to the Maze, there’s definitely some technical stuff that I might not take an offroad trailer.

Thanks, I'm mostly thinking about any really tight switchbacks with my trailer. It's a very short pop up (10 ft) with good clearance.

I'm not sure if there are any major switchbacks along the Poison Spring route. Like @KevinK mentioned, it should be fairly easy going up to at least the crossing. I definitely would not recommend a trailer along the Flint Trail switchbacks if you were to want to exit via Hans Flat. Some of those are tight enough with just a full size truck.

Should be a good fun run to the Spring. Some amazing views out there.

Yeah, I hadn't seen the switchbacks on my map - they're so tight, it looked like a straight line at my zoom level. :anonymous:

We started up them and at the first turn had to make it like a 4 point. And then looked at the climb to the next switchback and thought, 'well, I hope this is the worst one. Not sure we have enough gas to get back out.' It wasn't the worst one, but we did manage the whole climb. Very interesting part of our trip. One of my favorites actually. Running solo in an unfamiliar place is pretty exhilarating.

Next time you're out that way, try to make it out to the Maze Overlook. There's some fun semi-technical sections going out that way and a couple awesome campsites on the rim. It's also the main trailhead if you want to drop down into the Maze. Only downside is you have to bring in your own portable pooper to reserve one of the campsites on the rim.

    Thanks man!

@n2deep have a peek at this. We should plan a few days back there for an SGU trip.

Hell yea! Looks awesome. I'm gonna try to make a quick trip in in a couple weeks. Unfortunately won't have time to camp.
