I've never had a canopy or RTT, but after selling my Diamondback cover I've been researching all options. One of the more intriguing options is from this new company. They told me they should have a model for a new Tundra crewmax in May. This checks a lot of boxes, but still wondering about window options and dog ventilation. Also, I think their window option in the front won't open so cleaning the crewmax window will be tough. A lot of pros from this design though. Any thoughts?

I'll be adding the Go Fast Campers to my Tundra. I believe the window at the base of the cab will fold-down or have a single panel that slides open. Adding side windows will be up to the user from what I was told. It can be done but might require heavier struts for the side panels.

That would be cool if you're right about the window, but I recall reading that it wouldn't have that option. I also know they are constantly evolving and I think they will come out with ventilation options and other options / accessories as well. I'm liking a lot of what I see.

Seems like a good alternative to the adventure habitat as long as it doesn't cost 15k.

Looks like you're right. At first they were considering a window that could open but now its non-opening. I bet you could find an alternative to make it fold down. I can't imagine it being much different than most camper shell windows

GFC has an XL version coming soon (will fit 2007-2018). They will hopefully have it released at Overland Expo West.

**If you have an 2009- Present F-150 or 2007-Present Tundra, we are going to support those vehicles with our XL system, which is slightly has a wider sleeping area than our current offering, and will be released soon. For inquiries on those vehicles, please email graeme@gfcengineering.com.**

I looked into those but they are heavier than i want and don't think they would hold up the way I drive- even if they list it as GoFast lol

But it does solve my issues with the RTT- You can stand up and i have room for my dog in the bed along with a heater if needed

How lightweight are you trying to go?

I'm pretty confident these will survive even the craziest of conditions. Throw some Total Chaos bed stiffeners in the back and you'll be golden.

250lbs sounds light to me for a rack and tent. What weight are you looking for? What do you think the weak points are for this one?
I have basically no experience with racks and tents, so my questions really are questions.

Have bed stiffeners but the bed hits the cab so there is a lot of bed twisting and movement. Will it hold up? Maybe but i am not gonna throw 5k to test it. lol
The RTT is about 200lbs with everything - so about the same weight and I want to ditch the RTT now due to weight

Will wait and see once they hit the market how they work.

Well Deavers are spec'd for about 500-600lbs
    2 spares - 200lbs
    14 gallons of water - 120lbs
    14 gallons of Fuel - 88lbs
    hi-lift/compressor- 80lbs
    RTT- 200lbs

That is 688 lbs before i add any firewood, food, or camping gear. So where do I cut weight??

Are you on multi-day trips in the boonies where you need 14 gallons of fuel and water? Reducing those down closer to 8 gallons would shed a nice chunk. Same applies for the spares. It all depends on the trips you're doing, some people need that extra gear and some don't.

Yeah i never carried 2 spares until i got 2 flats in the middle of nowhere at 11pm - LOL And have a few trips where 14 gal of fuel isn't enough-Nevada and Utah are desolate. The water is a hit or miss- depends on how many days we are out but its nice to shower every night and rinse the dust off to feel human. Normally we are out for 3-5 days or longer if the wife doesn't go.

Its a compromise between weight and performace - right now the truck is sitting on jack stands due to a broken main leaf spring. Wonder how that happened?

I actually asked them about being able to mount one at the top of the bed sides without the rack cause I like the design but would love to cut out the rack weight. But wasn't in the plans at the moment. Would be cool if you could drop it into the bed stake pockets without a rack but the whole unit would need to hinge up to get to the bed contents.

check @gfc_usa for the most recent pic with a small amount of air under the tires of a Tacoma. I too want to see how these hold up to some offroad use.

I emailed a few questions and received this reply:

Apologies for the delay, not sure how this message slipped through the cracks on my end.

Thanks for reaching out. We are going to release XL units for purchase in May. We are working on a ventilation solution for the dogs/kids, as it has been a heavily requested item. We are also currently building a unit with windows, so stay tuned on our social media for updates.

Again, apologies for the delay, and hope that answers your questions,

There's a thread on Tacoma world with a ton of information on the build process on these campers...over 100 pages long.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hondo-garages-new-thing.516490/page-105

I've been looking for more information on the full size version, surprised this hasn't taken off on the tundra forums yet...guess they're more in tune w the Tacoma crowd.

I actually just bought a tundra and am on the preorder list for the Gfc. Bought the tundra just for this camper actually. Hoping to build a "poor mans" sportsmobile. Seems to be as light and rugged as you can get for a camper option on a truck.

Tundra crowd is a little bit different. I've noticed more flashy builds and less geared towards hitting the trails.

Makes sense...this thing is huge. Not everyone is a fan of pinstripes. I wear them as a badge of honor.

Xl is being released in may, but a taco order placed today is currently scheduled for July delivery. I'm order 108, hoping they start pumping out the xl before they fill all the taco orders. Can't wait to see one on the tundra...especially mine.

Agreed, a lot of mall crawlers and tow rigs on here. BASTRDS and SGU aren't afraid running these pigs and getting pinstripes.

Hey guys, this is Graeme from GFC.

I can confirm that we plan to launch the XL version of the platform for fullsize trucks in May (at overland expo west). This is the unit that fits the tundra, and is a 6" wider sleeping area than the mid size truck version. It also has a slightly increased standing area, and will retail at $5750+ship (or pick up+install for free).

We are doing a pre-order that holds spots in line for production on these units, and I would be happy to fill you in if you want to send me an email. Its kind of under the radar for now, but its a 10% deposit that is fully refundable until you pay the remainder and we begin building your unit. We plan to start manufacturing XL product in late may, and we are currently booked out to about July.

Happy to answer any questions you might have too. I will keep an eye on this thread for sure.

I don't doubt that it will hold up to the way you drive, but there is no denying that a truck that doesn't have a camper on it will be better offroad. I think we have made a good compromise between comfort, weight, strength, build quality and pricepoint. But everything is a compromise.

If you ran the camper without the aluminum panels (which we can totally sell) it would be notable lighter weight. The panels probably add around 50 pounds.
