New key and fob programing

Does anywhere know where to pick up a spare key and fob to get programmed rather than Toyota? I just called them and they're looking for almost $300 to do the whole thing. Just trying to cut cost a little bit here. Anyone who may have done this already any help would be great

Another option is a reputable locksmith. They carry replacement keys, fobs and will cut and program.

 

Genuine Toyota key blank $11 from Amazon and cut at local hardware store, aftermarket fob $15 from Amazon. Had both programed by friend with techstream

How does all this work? If I buy a key blank, have it cut at home depot, what do I do with the cable and software to make the key and fob work?

 

First, realize that the Tundra keys for newer trucks are not like older models where you can get a key at Home Depot, have it cut and off you go...these keys have a security chip in them, so you have to get the correct key to match the year of truck (2018 takes a different key code than 2016 - 2017 for instance). So, after you get the proper key and have it cut, then you use the cable and software to set up the key security chip to be recognized by the ignition. Finally, if you have a key fob along with the key or all in one key, you have to set up the fob to be recognized by the truck.
I bought my key from an eBay seller (key for my specific year Tundra) and had a locksmith cut and program key and fob. You can have 4 keys total; this made 3 for my truck. Hope this helps.

Copy thanks. So you're actually talking to the truck when you program a new key, rather than talking to the key....?

 

Yes, you follow the instructions from the software on the PC and insert the key into the ignition and the truck looks for the chip in the key. Then you are programming the truck to accept the key fob transmission.

Does anyone know if the tech stream software is available for Mac? If not, is there any other software that I can use to keep from having to get this done at the dealership?
