I am wanting to replace my stock air filter as the truck is over 2 years old and never been changed. Is the factory brand the best or what brand and/ or part number do you guys like? Where to buy? Sorry for the dumb question.

I'd use an OE filter. I live in dusty, agricultural Modesto. The orchards are brutal. Thick dust. I wouldn't trust myself to thoroughly clean one of the higher priced reusable ones. Every 20k or so it needs changing. Cheap on Amazon.

OE filter user here. They are cheap and have good filtration which will help with engine life.

If I were you I go to a parts store and look at a premium Wix filter, they usually have much larger paper pleats.

Oh i know that! I dont need any high performance extra air flow...just a high quality oem equivalent. No engine mods on my truck. I have always used Wix on my other trucks and wifes car... just did not know if there was a favorite here.

I’ve heard the wix gold/premium filters are pretty good. Opinions run wild on consumables in here. Look and see what brand Toyota contracts with and get the equivalent or buy a Toyota one off Amazon or eBay. Get a couple and throw em in the garage and change as needed. I’d rather have a tad less flow and cleaner air than the alternative. I’m not drag racing lol. Trucks plenty fast.

Anyone know why there is a filter media permanently fastened inside the air box?
Seems to me that it could become clogged over time and never being changed out? Only way to replace it is to buy the engine side of the airbox..
Got a wix filter and it has a piece of foam halfway glued on it and I think that's weird too???

Been using them since the 70s. Great filters. Never have had any issues with K&N. Ever...

I have the AFE DRY drop in and TRD airflow accelerator.

I can’t speak for the power or how good it filters. To clean it I just bounce it dirt side down on a flat service until dust stops coming out. Eventually I’ll clean it w soap and water as directed.

Does it change the sound under throttle? Any mpg gains?

Little bit. Not a whole lot just sounds a little throatier. Some people get the whistle from the little screen behind the throttlebody. I think those that experience the whistle are usually running the K&N air filter. I experience no whistle just a deeper breathing beast. Couldn’t tell you if you get any power or miles per gallon yet. I haven’t been able to keep my foot out of it. I was going to test it on my recent trip to Vegas except I did about 75-85 mph the whole way. Not even going to bother checking that LOL

I don’t know if it’s placebo but to me the truck feels a little quicker with airflow accelerator and Afe drop in filter. Now I just added a BDX tuner (it was waiting for me here in Vegas) so any noticeable mpg gains from just the filter alone are out the window.

The part that is attached inside your airbox is a carbon type filter. From my understanding it’s there to catch any of the unburned fuel vapors when you shut your truck off. I ripped mine out the first week I had the truck. I also ripped it out of my wife’s car too.

Im guessing most guys never even notice it...never seen it talked about on here. I wonder if it would void warranty if removed?
Thinking about removing the silly foam pad on the new filter too. :notsure:

Careful pulling the foam pad. Not sure how they attach it wouldn’t want to ruin the filter element by ripping a hole in it.

I don’t see how removing the charcoal filter could void warranty. Its purpose is only filtering vapors to the atmosphere when the truck is off. It isn’t for protection of the engine
air intake. I bet they’d never even notice.

I researched before I took mine out and this is what I came to believe. Hope I’m right! But not to worried about it. Cars and trucks have survived a long time without them before this.

Because some people over oil them and then it fucks up there mass airflow sensor. Just don’t get stupid with the oil and you should be OK. I got stupid with too much or oil before on an old vehicle. I was young and nervous about not putting enough oil on it. Fucked up my mass airflow sensor LOL.

This. But I didn't over oil it. The oil just gets sucked through the filter and the MAS gets gummed up. Makes it a PITA when it's time to smog it.

Won't void warranty but in some states like Kommifornia it could be an issue with a smog inspector who knows where to look. Any changes to smog/emissions is a no no but I seriously doubt an Inspector would catch that. You never know. I removed the c filter on my Taco too. Don't think it makes any difference at all removing it.

I removed it from my wife’s car. I removed the cai for smog inspection. The stock intake feels so sluggish compared. I removed the c filter and it felt better. Im leaving it stock indefinitely now. Ordered a afe for it and calling it a day.

I tried sneaking the cai through but he wanted a carb#. He didn’t understand why the cai didn’t have one. I told him it needs a carbon filter like the stock intake. He says oh the charcoal canister. No dude its in the intake. He didn’t believe me. I left it at that lol! Went ahead and removed the carbon element when I got home. ;)

Agreed.... so IMHO, a better suggestion would be to "not over oil it" instead of "Avoid it like the plague".

I think more pleats is better. More surface area to filter through. Best filtration would have to be the oem Toyota filter.
