Exhaust dump before or after rear axle?

I've seen many people speak of dumping the exhaust pipe to help reduce drone. I see of lot of the dumped exhaust from the manufacturers have a turn down straight off the muffler but every post I've seen on this forum says to dump after the rear axle. Is there a specific benefit to this or is it just easier?

 

I would think it helps cut down on in cab noise being further away.

 

I dumped mine after the axle recently. I'd say the drone is slightly more noticeable after dumping. I have a resonator installed in the bend of the pipe, just behind the axle.

Rule of thumb:

Exit as far back as possible and exit the vehicle completely.

Dumping after axle at least follows part of the rule.

When a customer asks for a dump I normally try to figure out if drone is a concern for them. If it is then I try to talk them out if a dump. But if it absolutely has to be dumped then after the axle is the next choice.

 

Before axle( under cab) will be loud in the cab. The further back you dump it the less cab noise

 

Thanks all, makes perfect sense. I was just curious after reading all the other posts.

 

Not only will it be louder but you’ll be huffing exhaust all day long while idling and outside your truck. Such as putting groceries in it. Or your kids. Which isn’t cool imo.

 

I've got the TRD dual and it's dumped in front of the axle. My ride height required that I remove the tail pipes 'cause they were hitting the leafs.

 

I’ll be doing this after lift as well. I’ll be chopping all the fender add behind my rear wheels so most likely dump infront of rear wheels. I don’t like exhaust fumes. But I’ll take em for cool truck factor haha

 

I had the same situation as @831Tun
But I marked and cut the pipes right where they would be hitting the springs. This got the “dump” farther to the rear and aimed outward.

Keep in mind, these pictures are taken with the wheel off the ground and in full droop. Normally the exhaust is exiting below the springs not into them.

Actually a much better solution. My dumped pipes tend to "leaf blow" any dust that's under the truck.

Anybody reading this that has cut the stock tailpipe and is tired of the drone caused by that. We have a solution now. It’s a direct bolt on. The install starts at about 10 minutes in this video:

it’s the same Helmholtz resonator but we make it longer and it works really well at getting rid of the drone from cutting the stock tailpipe.

 

The factory connection is a weird flange.you’d be best to cut the stick tailpipe after the axle. This would accomplish your goal of dumping under the truck. And it would maintain your low end torque.
