So how does this work? Are you submitting to Toyota in hopes they will actually do something? Or does it go to another outlet who will use it to battle Toyota on the issue?

Going straight to toyota and nhtsa. As discussed in my thread about the petition, it's a long shot, but it can't hurt to try.

Why did you just put 2014+ Tundras since it affects Gen2 and Gen3?

Well got around to changing the oil today, had the repair done monday-tuesday And put on a little over 200 miles since then. Looks like they didn't do a drain and fill after the repair, so my truck was about 3qts low. Hopefully no adverse effects from running like this. Filter also had a lot of debris in it, mostly gasket material it seems. Took some pictures of a few pleats as an example for you guys. Not sure if I'm going to do next oil change at 5k or run the full interval to 10k. What do you guys suggest?

So for you guys who are going to have the repair done:

Be sure to check oil level after

Change oil and filter after 200miles like @TheBeast suggested.

yep. I would do the next one at 5K. cheap enough to do it earlier. Then you can get back to 10K.

Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question but.....I look into the engine and see chaos so really have know idea where I should be looking to see if I have this issue. Any pointers most appreciated.
Second question , is this issue only a matter of time before it materializes or do some trucks not have the problem?
Can you live with the problem , ie just keep feeding it oil?

I love my Tundra , I have about 35k miles on it and when I bought it new I intended to keep it for many years but this has now got me worried, I don’t need a problem when I’m fishing in the middle of knowhere, MT.
    Thanks ,

Just take a quick look through this thread and there should be some pics of the areas to look. It will be visible through your wheel wells. Also, not every Tundra gets this, but it seems to be not uncommon. That said, I don't think it's ever left anyone stranded. It seems to be one of those issues where if it happens, it gets fixed and very rarely happens again.

Thanks Buck, I had looked at pics but did not think to look from the wheel wells

Much easier to spot looking through the wheel wells, also look at your manifold heat shields. To answer your other questions it pretty much depends on the truck. Some seem to just seep and not loose much oil, others mine included leak pretty good. Mine was leaking on the passenger side rear and dripping onto the exhaust manifold and burning off there. So if you have a seep just monitor it, if its leaking that's your call if you want to keep adding oil or have it fixed. Since mine was going onto the exhaust manifold I was starting to smell it in the truck so it had to be fixed.

I had this happen on my 2013 CM with only 14,000 miles. Repair was covered and it is still holding up fine at 57,000 miles. I also called up Toyota Corporate and complained and they gave me a complimentary 100,000 mile warranty.

Seems like the guys with earlier model trucks had better luck getting the extended warranty, I tried this with mine and all they would offer was $350 towards parts or service.

maybe because back then less vehicles had it and Toyota was willing to make a gesture. Now with all the gen3's having the same issue it's getting crazy expensive

This was my thought as well, we already know they cut down on the tech's hours for repairing this job also. Must becoming an expensive fix for Toyota now, Maybe Gen4 will solve the issue.

I can't believe that it is still a problem. I think the addition of a hard gasket at the interface and maybe a slight change to the design of the mating surfaces would knock the problem out for good. Seems like it would be fairly easy to address for Toyota, but for some reason they don't.

Agreed, or just start using the supposedly better black sealant at assembly and maybe that would solve the issue as well. My guess though is we are at the end of this platforms run and this motor will not carryover so they are not looking to spend money on actually solving the issue. Instead handling it as they leak at the repair shop is what they feel is more cost effective.

Ok Gents, one thing after you get your truck from the dealer and one morning you see the lovely combination of flashing lights for the AIP or secondary air pumps: make sure you check the vacuum lines from the air intake....

Well, dropped it off this morning for the work to be done. I hope it goes well and I get the truck back for the weekend.

Got a purple RAV4 service loaner this time. The seats are terrible and I get this weird vibration feeling through the armrest that makes me think my phone is going off. The interior feels cheaper than a Corolla as well. Not a fan. I would have just gotten a Corolla again, but with the upcoming snow storm wanted all wheel drive so I’m not stuck in my driveway.

Blech. When I had my truck fixed, they had a Corolla replacement slated for me. But then the service manager looked at me and said "I'm not sure you will fit" (I'm 6'8"), and called the back and had them bring me another Tundra as a replacement.
