Anyone added blackout tape to their Tundra?

My 15 DC didn't come with the black pillars or "blackout tape" that goes between the windows. Just ordered some thanks to Roman, but I was wondering if anyone has installed them before? It seems like it would be pretty easy, but I was wondering how the fit is. Does the weatherstrip below the windows need to be peeled back in order to install them? (Not sure if they are cut perfectly to fit just above them or not)

May just let Toyota handle it when I go in for my 15k service next week, but I can only imagine what they will charge me to do something so simple.

 

This is the first time I've heard of anyone wanting to add blackout tape. Everyone else talks about removing it.

 

There are some people who like black pillar tapes, especially on Tundras with window tint. I for one would get the tape if mine ever got damaged.

I remember few years ago when people started taking off these tapes (at Tundra Solution). On dark trucks, no tape looked good. But a lot of us agreed that with light trucks, no tape looked worse.

 

Exactly, with my windows at 20% I prefer the look with the tape on a lighter truck like mine. Just think the solid black all the way across the front and back window area looks better. Also want somewhere ppl can push on to close front doors that isnt white so I dont have hand prints on my doors.

 

Thanks for the info man, I kinda figured that would be the case. Really don't wanna hassle with pulling back the weatherstrips and then reapplying adhesive to them. Might as well just let Toyota handle it when I drop it off for my service next week that way I know it turns out right.

Looks like a little more of a PITA than I want to deal with. Was hoping they would have cut them to fit just above the molding but I knew it was a slim chance.

 

What a pain in the ass. Dropped off at Toyota for 15k service and the guy told me they could put em on no problem. Calls 2 hours later and says they don't have the tools to do it, but will in a few weeks? Not sure what "tools" you need to pull the weatherstrip back and stick the damn things on and apply new adhesive to the strips. They ended up giving me a card to a body shop that quoted me "around $100" to put them on and said they would have to setup an appointment and they would need my truck the whole day. Don't wanna F em up by doing it myself so I guess I'm gonna be out another $100 to have 4 pieces of tape put on my truck.

 

Yeah the guy told me when I dropped it off at the dealership this morning "should be around 50 bucks". Not sure what tools they don't have that they would need. I was thinking it had to be something like a heat gun that may be needed to soften up the adhesive for the weatherstrips, but who knows. Apparently the body shop isn't capable of doing it themselves and they "have a guy" that would show up at his convenience and stick the tape on after they take the weatherstrips off (he says they have to take them all the way, and you can't just peel back the little piece that covers the tape).

Gonna try and get a few more quotes after lunch and see if I have better luck.

 

Thanks man. I'm wondering if the guy who did my window tint could do this. He has been around forever and does decals / wraps as well. Think I'm gonna drop by and talk to him before I go to any more shops. Yeah this Toyota dealership is a joke, there's a reason I drove 3 1/2 hours to get my truck instead of buy from them.

Just stopped by the tint guys shop hes gonna charge me $50 to put em on, and will only have the truck for an hour he said. Told me I should have just stopped by first and he would have made me some in any color I wanted even carbon fiber to match the tailgate stamp.

 

The guy ended up doing a better job than I could have imagined. He cut them perfectly to where they tuck just above the bottom weatherstrip and do not show any white, and then just tucked them underneath the weatherstrips on the sides without removing them. Definitely an improvement. Just need to get rid of the silver wheels now, considering plastidip until I get new rims/tires. Anyone plastidipped wheels before and left them on the truck?
