So the girlfriend and I (ie. leaving the dogs at home for this one) are planning an 8-day trip from San Diego to explore Utah and Colorado. We'll be leaving on July 7th (Saturday) and arriving back home on the 15th (Sunday). Anyone's welcome to join us for parts of the trip if they want but for now we're just planning on going solo. We'll be doing a little of everything: sight-seeing, hiking, trails, and tourist shit.

    Rough itinerary below.

Saturday: Drive toward Moab (hit Goblin Valley, Arches, and Canyonlands if possible)
Sunday: Moab (Hell's Revenge.. what else?)
    Monday: Moab/Ouray
    Tuesday: Ouray (Black Bear Pass!)
Wednesday: Ouray -> Canyons of the Ancients -> Four Corners
Thursday: Monument Valley -> Valley of the Gods
Friday: Antelope Canyon -> Lake Powell
    Saturday: Grand Staircase-Escalante
    Sunday: Drive home

If anyone has recommendations for anything, let me know!

Haha, I've heard the stories. We'll try and come prepared. At the very least, that means it won't be as busy.

Of those trails, I've only heard of Poison Spyder and Metal Masher. How long do you think each takes? Are they okay doing solo (we have a ton of recovery gear)?

For the summit? Have fun, man! I went there for the 8th summit when I had my FJ. It gets so busy during that week.

I know you are used to hot temps in the surrounding desert climates in CA (I was stationed just north of SD, best all around weather). However, it does get very hot in Moab, and it is just unforgiving in the summer. Downtown Moab is around 4K ft of elevation, so that doesn't help. The last time I went out in late May, first part of June it was 115*F and flippen miserable. I melted my Jesus shoes to the floorboards of the jeep..LOL. We felt lucky that in our air conditioned cabins, the temp would drop to 99*F at midnight. I felt like it was middle east all over again...LOL.

To be honest with you, I don't roll solo due to where I go. In Moab, I have only went on one trip solo, the very first time ever going. I figured there would have been a lot of people out on trails. Nope...and in the first 45 minutes I had a small oopsy. This was on High Dive, Behind the Rocks.

    748BA968-9F10-4046-954B-9EDF846451BB_zpswgonqi5c.jpg

15 min later I righted the TJ on all four wheels.

On another trail, I had some steering issues later on in the week. We were not sure if it would have made it off the trail. After that week, I decided not to play around in Moab solo.

Here was another trip a guy in a Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 almost bought the farm on Hells gate. He didn't have a spotter. Someone from our crew went the back way and put a winch to him.

To answer your question, there are plenty of cool trails in Moab that doesn't require a spotter or a group of rigs for the "just in case" moments. You look like one of the more prepared people I have ever seen...including myself. Take a lot of water, until you think it is ridiculous...and then grab 4 more gallons....you should be good.

It is hard to say how long each trail will take. When we took the Poison Spyder Mesa loop, that was 26+ miles of 4L and someone would always break something. Sometimes it was a 12 hour day, others it was...welcome to tomorrow. This past weekend I did one of the top 10 hardest trails in CO in 1 hour and let my 9 year old drive out.

If you see some trails that you might want to run, tag me in your thread and maybe I have done it in the past and can give you a no BS assessment.

I’m right where I need to be

I’ve been to Moab 3 times:
    1. October was warm but great weather
    2. June was HOT, but cooled off at night
    3. July 9th showed up at 8pm to 97 degrees and it never dropped below 95. Next day it hit 122 around 2 pm and we went through about 60 bottled waters. That night it never dropped below 100, despite “it cools off in the desert at night”
