There is a post somewhere that details the process. The folder has to be set up exactly as described in the post paying attention to format.

Here is what i had to do. My image i followed the instructions but it loaded looking like it was displaying from an atari because of the format of the bmp. It has to be exactly BMP 16bit Full Colour RGB 5,6,5 Ratio 96 dpi.

    I went here https://carboncarsystems.com.au/diy-change-kenwood-start-screen-image/
    Download their Subaru example
opened it in Photoshop.. You need some type of editor so you can save the image as a BMP 16bit Full Colour RGB 5,6,5 Ratio. It does not have to be photoshop but something that you can set the setting of the image. Paint will not work.

Copied over my TRD offroad image over the Subaru one. Told it to keep settings.
Checked the properties to make sure it is still a 16bit RGB 5,6,5 96 dpi.
saved it to my thumb drive.
save the text file to the thumb drive

Followed the instructions from the video on how to bring up the screen.
    And it worked.

FYI Once you overwrite the splash screen its gone so if you overwrite it with one that looks bad it will continue to look bad until you fix it with a good one. There is no way to revert.

FYI2 the comments in this link have allot of people that messed up and how they fixed it so reading them can help you not mess up

Just had installed a Alpine ILX-207 and a control box. Such better sound, Apple car play and ability to control 8 switches from the touch screen

I would really like to do this. The Apple Car play, better sound, and better Nav! How did you go about selecting a shop to do the install? I can't do it myself and I don't want someone to hack up my truck.....Thanks for any advice

I chose a Best Buy where the only install guy had 30 years under his belt installing. He did a good, clean job. Definitely make sure you are comfortable with installer.

I would say check out any of the local shops in person. You’ll get a feel right away if they are reputable or shady....ask to see pictures of custom installs they may have done. Easy way to weed out the weekend installer from a true professional

I have the JBL system and am not impressed. This isn't on my short list of mod's but I would only want to swap the head unit. I should still be able to get better sound just by that, right? It's been a few decade since I have kept up with car audio.

I was thinking about these same speakers. Would you recommend them, any pros/cons to them? Thanks for your time.
