I’m a fan of them in tractors, but can’t see why anyone would want one in a car.

Constant Variable Transmission - isn't that already in the Tundra because it CONSTANTLY downshifts on the slightest variation in the road.

My Prius had one. Once you get past the expectation of the shift-thump you quickly get used to it. That said, I hope to never see them used with V8s. I still want the sound and fury.

yup, love it in my ATV, but hate it in a car.... Just don't feel connected to it... It's like the engine emails the transmission what to do, and the transmission kinda most of the time checks its email. haha. I'd rather feel it shift.

I found that when I set the cruise to 70 on the Interstate it eliminates a lot of downshifting, probably because the engine is a little more in its torque curve at 1800 RPM. My truck also gets a little better MPGs at 70 compared to setting the cruise to 65 because there is less downshifting. Besides that, the Tundra doesn't downshift anymore then the Ram Hemi or F-150 with the 5.0L I had. The only truck with a little less shifting was my 3.5L EB or my Ram CTD (once they are in 6TH gear they stay there unless you tow).

My wife used to have a Nissan Juke with a CVT, I didn't think it was bad at all.

We had one in a Nissan, never had an issue. It is a little different feel but gets the job done.

That's the point, it gets the job done, what more can you ask for. Its about the same debate over the dial shifter vs. column vs. console shifter.

They don’t sell nearly enough trucks to warrant that engine. So hopefully the trucks will be safe

God please no CVT in a Tundra! :annoyed:

Glad I got mine with a regular transmission and V8 while I could.

My ‘08 Lexus RX400h had a CVT, and if I didn’t know better, I would have guessed that it was a worn out, loud, old Powerglide with one speed. Terrible trans. Drove a new Subie Outback couple weeks ago with a flat 6 and CVT, and it was awesome. The CVT actually had a manual mode, and you would shift with paddle shifters. The trans would imulate a 6 speed. Very cool. If I lived in snow country, the Subie would be my go to snow mobile.

Yes, if I was to buy a car it would be a Subaru Outback, no matter what kind of auto transmission it has.

I've got a 16 Corolla with one, it's OK..... not great. It pisses me off when the road gets hilly & the cruise is set, it can't decide what speed to go. It's just a work car so I'll tolerate it for now but won't buy another.

Yeah like the new Fraud Raptor? 3.5 6cyl HO eco boost engine with something like 450 HP and 510lb-ft. I feel like I'd have that thing on fire on the side of the road in a month. hahaha

We have two Altimas with Cvt. They fake shift to immulate a regular tranny because people complained. Totally stupid. You press on the throttle to accelerate and yet the tranny controller blips the throttle to make you think it's shifting, which in turn slows you down. And I hear that they generally grenade at about a hundred thousand miles.

CVT's in general are great. They keep the engine at the "desired" RPM to maximize torque and fuel mileage. I've driven and been a passenger in a handful of CVT cars. I actually like it, it tends to be a very linear power delivery. I've always liked that feeling though, a very linear, powerful, but controlled launch, it feels "electric" without being electric.

I snowmobiled a lot from 98-08, the launch that a sled has on tacky snow is still one of the most exhilarating feelings, and that's all thanks to a CVT. I also drive some higher performance UTV's at work regularly, all CVT, and all impress me with how they launch, find traction, and keep the engine where it needs to be all the time.

Now all that said, the technology needs to be heavy duty and adapted for real world truck use. I have blind confidence that engineers can design a CVT to handle towing and offroad use. A lot of the UTV's are running tires as big as my truck and get the shit beat out of them every weekend. I would hope that a room of engineers, especially Toyota engineers, can design a CVT that will be reliable.

Would I want a CVT in a truck? If it was proven, torture tested, and improved fuel mileage, then sure. I would prefer a CVT over a 7,8,9, or 10 speed tranny, the direction a lot of other vehicles and trucks are going. I don't like non-stop gear hunting on the highway when you're cruising at just that right speed on just that right grade for 50-100 miles, I would rather NO shifting and the tranny just ever so slightly modulates to keep you at the desired speed. I think there are a lot of benefits, those just need to come with reliability and a real improvement to MPG.

My wife's Altima has it. You can't even feel the shift, but was doing 70 in .no time
X2, my wife's 13 has it. It was weird not feeling the shift, but once down the road I was @ 70mph in no time. Not a big deal .
