My transmission guy says that there is a known issue with the first gen tundra/sequoia tranny where the overdrive planetary is undersized and prone to fail. He pulled my pan and it was full of shavings, he suggested me dump the vehicle or look at a transmission replacement.

I am at 188K miles, I do have some issues with the VSC and ABS but I would like to squeeze another 50 or 100k out of this. Do I go with a remanufactured unit or just have him replace the overdrive assembly gear? Or maybe a used 2nd gen transmission, will it bolt right in?

Is this really a known issue, it seems like I see a lot of 1st gen sequoias pushing 300k miles.

    Thanks!!

Glad you asked! I don't have the answer, but my 01 tundra is exhibiting a weak transmission as well and i'd like to know everybody's take on it. FYI it has 300k on the clock and the transmission was replaced under extended warranty at about 100k. I have no intentions in dumping it as I have a sentimental attachment to it.

Is it 2wd or 4wd? He is sort of right but I never had issues with my 2wd from close to same year. You can put 4wd from 2004 in there and there will be no issues. They beefed up the planetary gear in those. As far as dumping it that really depends as old 4wd is worth more than old 2wd. My previous company always said when repair reached 70% of value you should drop it. Mostly cause if you choose to sell a broken car expect 10-20% of its value. Definitely do not repair it and sell it.

Most folks can't repair transmissions without costing as much as a new one...
