:thumbsup:My buddy and his wife share the same birthday, very cool! My wife and I think the world of this awesome couple. That said we pulled out all the stops for our friends. So the menu tonight is - Hickory smoked grass fed thick dry rubbed, bacon wrapped local tenderloin, one dry rubbed Lemmon pepper, garlic and precooked thick bacon stuffed large brown trout (I caught last summer), one large thick bacon wrapped garlic and a special game rubbed venison tenderloin.
I will post follow up pics after I open the smoker later this evening....we are putting on the birthday feast for our friends! Life is food, I mean life is good!!

How long have you had your traeger and this might be a silly question but how do you like it? Lol. Can’t decide between the traeger timberline or a Yoder. The Yoder definitely looks more robust but the price tag is hefty

This is amazing, I joined this site a few weeks back and have really enjoyed it and today I discovered this Traeger section. Awesome! I own one and highly recommend them. They offer shop classes that are amazing and show you how to do everything. They teach them all over the US (see link below). All my neighbors now have them so it makes it fun. Here is a real simple turkey recipe using the Spatchcock method (basically cut the spine out, press it flat and it cooks in half the time. Super moist).

    https://www.traegergrills.com/shopclass

I've also done the above just by running to Walmart and getting a cheap Creole kit (rub, butterix and injector mix) for like 3.99 and it turns out amazing too!

All of these grilled goodies look so good..

I have a Traeger that was given to me by family in 2002. This was back when they were all hand made in Mt. Angel Oregon cause one of the guys in my wedding worked there at the time. He remembers when they were "experimenting" on building the grills when at the time all they built was Wood Pellet stoves.

Mine still works great and sits outside in Oregon, not an easy life :) (I do have a grill cover but it still is in the elements)

Now they are main stream and made in China...

It looks like there are a few Traeger competitors out on the market now. Louisiana Pellet Grills is one. Have any of the competitors put out a better alternative or is Traeger still the one to buy?

There are so many Traeger cooking videos on their website, youtube, internet and you can sign up for their emails as well. It is super easy to find the recipes, cook times, temps, how to's, etc... I have found that some folks really get into this and go out of their way to answer questions too. I can't speak about the other brands out there.

Definitely better ones out there. MAK, Fast Eddy, Yoder, Memphis, Pitts & Spitts and a bunch of others. I recently picked up a Pitts & Spitts and am extremely pleased with it. Very even temps, produces a good amount of smoke and it’s literally built like a tank. Almost 400lbs for their smallest unit. B53AF189-8AC1-4EC7-A899-F7DEF7CACBB9.jpg

I purchased my Green Mountain Grill about 3 years ago and love it. The customer service is second to none. At the time the GMG was the only 1 that provided digital displays for meat temp, push button temp controls, and wifi enabled to control temps from your phone. I'd give them a fair shot to impress you.
Some of these are the BIG names out there, but you are also going to pay the big prices....and in my personal opinion some should of stuck with conventional stick burning units.

They all come will books and many you tube videos along with trial and error. The biggest thing that most people dont realize is the brand of pellets. Find the pellets that work for YOU and YOUR SMOKER! I've played with a few and have my set blend I like to use.

The only one you’re gonna pay big money for is the Memphis but people swear by those. Can’t speak on them personally as I’d never spend that much on a pellet smoker but who knows. The others are priced similarly with traeger but you get way more for your money

I'm actually grateful for Traeger. I am not a set-it and forget-it kind of guy. I prefer screwing around with the smoker all day long. So, I knew I wasn't ever going to get a Traeger. For years I smoked on a charcoal grill that I had converted into a smoker. It did fine, but I always wanted to get a nicer unit. Then, a friend of mine got a Traeger. Pretty nice unit I thought, but it still wasn't my game. However, I was a bit jealous of the new grill, so I saved up and got myself a nice little cabinet smoker from Humphrey's. Love that thing. I think that eventually I am going to buy a true stick burner. But for now, the Humphrey's is awesome. smoker.jpg

I dont know about you but in comparison, anything over a $1k, Yoder and RecTec both fall in that category, for a pellet smoker is pricey.
