I know a lot of people like the U shaped one. Just want to hear if there's anyone who likes the V shaped one. If so, do you think there's an advantage to have one like that? Do you think those that got the V shaped one are overreacting a bit?

Not flaming anyone, I'm genuinely curious as to why Toyota switched them from being U to V shaped around 2012.

I have never been able to find out the reasoning behind the V shape. Lots of dead space in those corners. I prefer the U shape.

I think the V shaped takes a lot of usable space from the tailgate, I have a U shaped one and I really like it.

The V was done due to a law change to allow the tail lights to be more visible to vehicle when following behind the truck.
At least here in Ontario, Canada that's what we've been fed.

Interesting. I was wondering, and that makes sense (somewhat). Yet, both styles are still for sale, so does that mean that the U is not legal? Or is it just required in certain jurisdictions ?

I thought maybe the V is to clear the wheel wells on short beds, but it seems like the U fits all beds .

I like mine. Got near new for $100 off Craig's List. The "V" are angled but slightly deeper. Almost the same area.
