    Hello:

I have a 2000 Tundra TRD (95K) in great shape. But when I disengage the 4wd I hear a loud CLUNK in the transmission.

What is this sound and should i fix it?

kind of normal. I always make sure I'm in rolling neutral or park and let it spin for five or so seconds before going into drive again and it doesn't clunk.

That's what a neighbor told me, he had almost 300K on his 2003 tundra 4x4, he said it was "normal." Just doesn't sound normal when it happens.

there's numerous other posts all over about it. do a tundras.com google search and there's definitely answers to exactly what it is. I've learned to cope.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
My 2nd generation Tundra does this if I put it in 4WD while sitting still. If I engage/disengage 4wd when rolling, it does not clunk and seems to engage smoother.

I should add it happens when driving down the road. Not as pronounced when sitting still.

my 2004 has done this since 30 miles on the odometer, 200k now and still works fine, it does this while engaging and disengaging under a load, if I let off the gas while activating the switch, the clunk is not noticeable. Hit the switch while ascending a hill under power, it is very noticeable !
    and welcome from CO
