Same thing happened to us. Replaced Secondary air Injection pump under warranty late 2014 and almost the same thing two weeks ago. Was told Toyota would honor the extended warranty until 150K miles. Replaced under warranty. I'll have to check but I _think_ both pumps replaced first time around! If so - that raises another question about longevity of the replacement parts.

The "burn" is on those of us w/ 2011 Tundras. They used the same part then changed the warranty to the lesser 30,000 mile coverage. I had just under 60,000 when it happened. They were complete ***holes about it. They were mainly upset that I change my own oil instead of paying them $100 every three months (go figure)! Went through two dealerships and then up to corporate before they agreed to give me a "good will" repair. Only catch...They wanted me to leave my truck with them for 2-3 months waiting for the back ordered parts! No loaner because it was a "good will" fix! I can't do without a vehicle for 2-3 months. I took my truck and they said they would call when the part came in. 2yrs later.. I called them several times...still no parts...they NEVER called me. I bought a by-pass (this one had plug-in wiring...so can be taken off at any time) so I no longer really cared. $200 and had to put in a couple of block plates on the ports. I will never buy another Toyota or step foot in one of their dealerships. Also, if I had them "fix" it...they would re-flash the computer and the by-pass would not work (gee..wonder why they do that?).

A little late to the party.. but I just purchased an 08 dc 5.7 with 135k. I have read every AIP thread I could find, but still have a couple questions regarding my specific situation. I don't believe any AIP service has been done. My main question would be: If I do nothing and hope for the best. Can I still use the bypass after a failure? I have no problem spending money on the bypass if It will eliminate this headache in the future, however. I was also curious about emission testing (Seattle, Wa) If I install the bypass as a precaution, can I just unplug it when I go in for emissions? Thanks

Summary: install bypass before failure, or wait and see if it ever fails?

The AIP system only runs when the Cat's (Catalytic Converters) are cold, there should be no problem passing inspection if your truck is warmed up.

My 2012 4.6 just got this pesky code today. Secondary air injection pump stuck open, or something like that. I haven't called toyota to see if its covered or not....But why wouldn't it be? They used the same parts on the 2010 and earlier, on the 2011 and 2012's. Anybody with a 2011+ get this covered under warranty?

I have a bypass module on my 4.7l 4runner and was on of the first things I ordered for my 144k mile 5.7l tundra. I ordered a more homemade version of the kit from a guy on the 4runner forums for a much better pricetag than the rutech kits. I'll let everyone know how it works once installed and hopefully avoid any SAIP issues in the future!

I installed the kit this morning, and all seems to be running well. Cleared the codes and looks good.

Super easy install of the slyfox kit only requiring cutting 1 wire in the MAF plug for the IAT sensor - "THA" pin 4 wire from the wiring diagram, yellow with black stripe. Fired up the truck cold, no vacuum cleaner sounds, all is well!

I seem to have an issue with my Smog pump or secondary injection pump. Iv noticed that a bypass kit can be purchased. Would like to know if there are any alternatives to bypassing the injection system such as just wiring the into the MAS harness and completely removing the system and rerouting the hoses. Also my codes read that its a electrical issue not a water intrusion problem. Can any on help?

I don't think you can eliminate the AIP system in terms of removing it, but the bypass kits essentially do that. They block off the exhaust ports and the plug and play kit basically keeps the system turned off.

My Secondary AIP NIGHTMARE with a Happy ending.

Always happy to drive my Tundra as its drives soo smooth and problem free for 9 years now since 2010. Only time I had issues, but can’t count since it was a pre-diagnosis that the water pump was showing signs of leakage. Bit the bullet paid the $800 to get it fixed it before it gave me issues. Googled it figured tundras have issues with water pumps. That was my 5th/6th year with the vehicle. Only other bother really the low tire pressure, came up here and there due to the winter. (Story begins) I was driving down the freeway as happy as I can be listening to my tunes. 10 mins into my drive driving at about 70 mph, the dreaded limp mode kicked in! Keep in mind I had no idea what limp mode was not a clue. So I think uh oh what’s wrong no power, I think I accidentally put it in neutral or its in the manual plus an minus shifting mode as I've done in the past. NO, all is good, its on drive. Uh oh what did I break I think. Obviously I’m just hoping for the best, even tho I clearly see the check engine light and the car with the squiggly lines (traction) are both on. So I finish my drive in another 6 mins. I noticed the only system really cutting off about 80% of my throttle and even if revs hard time shifting to the next gear. (Side note on downhills or flat streets ok given low revs to drive faster, Hills tho a nightmare on limp mode since higher revs and system doesn’t let you rev high to gain speed, I call it chipmunk mode) So I’m at work panicking quietly googling but really my plan is to just take it to Toyota right out of work. So I take it in from my research found out what limp mode was etc. I get to Toyota after work. Tell the service guy there two lights came on and its on limp mode. Guy gets my info. I reiterate “hey its on limp mode”. He repeats “it's on limb mode show me” he points at the dash. NOT GOOD lol (he was a young kid) I explained Limp mode is a term referring to the vehicles power/throttle is being restricted to about 20% only 20% power. He says ok. I’m thinking oh God. So fast forward, they find only one code which was P2432, we have a back and fouth for 4 entire days, its being looked over master mechanics he tells me. That code P2432 is not covered in the extended 10 year, 150k warranty, so they don’t wanna cover it. Even tho that code is directly dealing with to the Secondary air injection system. So the service adviser ensures me he’s doing all he can to fix the issue aka cover under the 10y/150k warranty. Even tho that code P2432 from the defective secondary air injection system is not covered, it falls through the cracks of Toyotas codes to cover the issue under warranty. These are the codes that are covered according to him, he sent me in an email: DTC CODES APPLICABLE = P0418, P0419, P2440, P2442, P2441,P2443,P2445,P2447. I feel for the 2011 tundra owners and other years affected by problem but not covered. I end up realizing they’re just not going to cover me, this is one of two Toyota dealerships in town. So I call Toyota hotline directly express my concerns and they tell me they can't do anything due to the fact that, each dealership is independently owned, and I’m not covered according to the codes they cover on the extended warranty my vehicle don't display any worthy of being covered. The service guy expressed that he knows they should be covering me under warranty but by the book they cant. I rebut with the guy without anger just facts still the answer is no. I Call that same dealerships maintenance director I also rebut the issue, she respectfully listens patiently but still says no. You see how I’m now panicking, what are the odds the other dealer going to cover me, they’ll go by the book and my case will fall through the cracks. I begin to remember what some of the guys on the forums have expressed feeling. Screw Toyota I’ll never buy one again, ill go Chevy, ford, dodge, even tho I’m a huge Toyota fanboy. BTW I expressed those concerns service director, about Toyota guys leaving Toyota due to their lack of customer service with the Secondary air injection pumps how many fall through the cracks, 2011 trucks etc. She listened but still unwilling to lift a finger to help. I was already reading about how to bypass the issue, but now I dove deep. While doing all that I had called the other dealer just to rebut and get turned down I thought whatever ill fix my truck with bypass, but I ain’t going down without a fight. First call to a low-level service person you get when you call service. He was absolutely rude, explained issue and said, “well you’ve already answered your own question” (about 10y/150k warranty) basically saying you’re not covered if the codes don't match I just hung up because I wanted to punch him through the phone the lack of customer service. Now I’m at a solid 9/10 hating Toyota. My last call and last action before I finally gave up trying to get covered I called the same dealer with rude service dude, but I called the Service director. As I learned that when you call Toyota, Toyota rep contacts Service director and tries to put a word for you, in my case “tough luck no coverage” that was the first dealer. Second dealer I called the service director since I know the game now. No answer but I think they need to call back so they’re good at calling you back. So I left the man Paul. D a detailed voice since by now I’m like an expert in the secondary injection air flow pumps, how they work, codes they shoot out etc. So I thought he won't even return my call I bet he heard the shit show I explained who what’s to deal with that. So Paul. D does end up calling me back I missed call by mins I call him, he answers, he right away seems to understand the voice I left him. He says so your truck went LIMP, said yes. Told him I paid already for full diagnostic at other dealers and refused to cover. I told him I was 100% its the faulty secondary pumps causing all sorts of codes, because water intrusion. (BTW when my truck was leaving dealer one the service tech told me two new codes popped up that were still not covered P0412 and P2433). So Dealer two Paul D. Service director says bring me the truck when its LIMP and codes are showing, ill take a look at it. (because I had hold dealer one to erase codes so it wouldn’t be on limp) (the truck was LIMP and codes were still showing when I pick up form dealer one so I took it next morning) told him I’m not paying again for diagnostic, (Since I had paid at dealer one for full diagnostic)he said no just wanna see if your problem is related to 2nd air injection pump system. I thought God please my last hope. I take it into dealer and was two hours since they were busy. Two hours go by no response yet since I was waiting. I got up and asked what’s going on with my truck, they said let me get service tech working on your vehicle to tell you what’s going on. So Female walks me in, the guy is there looking like he missed lunch but I think he was just one of those grouchy looking type. I say what’s going on. He’s like well “I called”I think damn I’m screwed! He finishes “we don’t have the parts we have to order them” I told him “So is it covered” He says “yes you’re covered” Wow I’m so happy at this point. Tech tells me “I don't know why they didn’t cover you at the other dealership, only logical response was well I bought the vehicle here and not at the other Dealer maybe that's why. Because the Service Director had pulled the file that truck had been purchased there while I spoke to him over the phone. Sorry for the long-winded version. Hopefully it helps some of you. Only reason I didn’t give up because I heard success stories here about their persistence paying off. So I did the same at it worked. Thanks for your time, Cheers. $2,700 before taxes and $2,943 after tax, All covered by TOYOTA. Now my vehicle will be there for 4 days give or take. No rental didn’t ask for one because have second car. I’ll maybe update with pic of service done and codes and such the offiical las figures and codes on the service report. Thanks you all have a blessed day.

That's great they covered it for you! As with mine and some others, don't be too surprised if it fails again in a few years. I had mine replaced under warranty and last year I had the same issue again, which is why I went with the bypass kit. The "wonderful" lady I spoke with at corporate Toyota told me I was 3 months out of warranty, but it would not have mattered if I was 3 days out of warranty, they still wouldn't have covered it. I told her I was really losing faith in Toyota then, that they once stood for reliability, seems like they could figure out how to fix a $3k repair so it doesn't go out every few years.

You said last year replaced and it failed again? Wow. I'm hoping for another 9 years maybe 10 years due to new redesign with the plastic caps for slight better water repellent. Plus the ECU reflash to better manage the open close flaps for water drainage I've read. I was 3 months from loosing coverage in June! Cutting it short on that coverage. My miles 134,XXX.
I'm sorry to hear that you weren't covered that second time and within a year, such a bummer, toyota replaced both air injection pumps on your tundra? About your bypass how is been since you've had it. Reason I ask is I'll be doing that eventually. I've read up on the matter (bypass) really interested in hearing the success stories with the bypass. I understand that some people either got defective bypass or what not and don't last long but rare. I read a guy on the forums had the bypass for 5 years with no issues. The young service adviser at Toyota at dealer that wasn't able to cover me I mentioned to him what owners with the secondary AIP issues did to get around the issue and said didn't recommended it because it will cause cat problems but I think his inexperience talking. All I've read on forums is 97% positive. Other than the rare post about perhaps water still getting in there further and damaging other stuff in the long run, correct if wrong, I'm sure you're much knowledgeable about the matter please explain. I'm all for the bypass btw. I love tundras but these issues come on Toyota lol. That guy on YouTube that reached the 1 million miles on his tundra. I think he was probably driving in some desert city or something with little water. Or forgot to say he changed the 2nd AIP three lmao. Well may our tudras live on to the millionth mile and beyond. So many memories with my tundra, even if I get new one I wanna keep it, see how many miles I can get it up to. Cars were meant to be driven. I drive my truck as much as I can, not one of those to try and keep my miles low. I bought to use it. Not to weasle out of driving when it calls that 8 hour trip cross state.

I apologize, no mine didn't fail within a year. I had mine replaced under warranty back in 2015 (truck is an 08). Then again in October 2018, it failed again. The 2nd time was not covered under warranty, and I went with the bypass.
