Hey guys I just bought my first vehicle at the prime age of 30. (The rest we’re used/hand me downs). I haven’t purchased the extended warranty for my tundra but was wondering what warranty you bought, at what price and if it’s even worth it. Thank you and I’m happy to be part of the club

No need for a extended warranty...not sure how long you plan on keeping it but I’ve never bought an extended warranty for a Toyota, hence why I buy a Toyota :D:thumbsup:

Disagree. On my taco i had a rear diff issue that paid for the extended warranty plus some. I also had the fan for the heater go twice.
I paid 2k for 10 year 125K platinum warranty. Shop around the dealerships. You have until your factory warranty ends to get the extended.

Toyota is stopping dealers from selling warranties across state lines now so unless you are in the same state you most likely will not be able to use the same dealer.

Not exactly true. I think they stopped dealers from ADVERTISING across state lines. I just bought an extended warranty out of state last week. I paid under 1200 for 8/100k

I called around to ones that people here said they got theirs at and I was told by the ones that i called that they could not do it anymore. You could have got a dealer that did not care.

Good luck. With the prices of all the electronics in our trucks these days I like the security of having the warranty.

Really can't go wrong with a fairly comprehensive warranty for around $1k. With vehicles it's generally pay now or pay later.

I am well aware of Toyota reliability, being bulletproof, and running for a million miles. I am also familiar with the cost to replace an AC compressor, power steering pump, or ECM. All of which I've had to cough up money for in the past 10 years, and all on Japanese vehicles.

I like the piece of mind. I've purchased extended warranties on our last 3 vehicles. 2 of them paid out more than they were worth. The 2 that paid out were on a Tacoma and a Honda Civic (2 vehicles with outstanding records of reliability). The one that we had on my wife's Sonata was never needed.

I purchase an extended factory warranty for every new vehicle I buy. A tactic that I (and many others) use is to seek quotes from other dealers prior to purchasing and use that as pricing leverage at my purchasing dealer. I can tell you that Midwest Toyota in Kansas and Greenfield Toyota in Massachusetts have awesome extended warranty pricing.

Regarding my use of extended warranties… I have always come out on top and it has never been a waste of money.

Welcome from Arizona. I got the warranty for piece of mind knowing that any major repairs are covered. The odds of needing major repairs on a Toyota seem to be lower than they are for other brands but mechanical stuff breaks sometimes and it's nice to know that if that happens to my truck I wont be facing major unexpected expenses.

Can you sell back the unused portion of the Toyota extended warranty if you sell the vehicle or decide you no longer need it? I've bought other extended warranties with this option.

Warranties are a gamble. Some people never use them, others pay for themselves rather quickly.

I had a certified pre-owned, and under my extended warranty had the front differential replaced. The deductible was 75.00 and the bill was 2400.00.
The service department first thought I had a bad wheel bearing. I informed them that the wheel bearing was not getting hot at long distance freeway speeds, and I was using thermal imaging from work. In fact, my passenger side wheel bearing was hotter than the suspected drivers side wheel bearing assembly. Since I obviously know nothing, the wheel bearing assembly was swapped out but didn’t fix the issue (front differential did though...lol) They handed me a bill for 1004.00. I handed them my certified pre-owned card and gave them 75.00.

When I sold the truck, the cam tower seal was weeping a little. Probably would have never paid to repair it, but in the event the leak would have deemed unlivable, I would have given Toyota another 75.00 for a 4000.00 job.

I’m one of the few that used the hell out of my extended warranty. All this was done between 67-89k miles.

The problem with extended warranties on a new vehicle is that you pay for it through your financing over say 5 years or whatever term you have, so you pay interest on it. You also pay for the 3 years that you are covered by the factory warranty anyways. So, say you buy the warranty and after 3 years you decide to trade the vehicle in, you have paid on the warranty for 3 years while covered by you factory bumper-to-bumper warranty.
I would rather wait until closer to the end of my factory warranty. By that time you would have a better feel for the general reliability of the vehicle, and more important, you will have a better feel of how long you want to keep the vehicle.

On a used vehicle I would probably consider the warranty since I don't know why the previous owner sold it and what he did to it.

You don’t have to finance the extended warranty. Pay for it up front.

Yes, but still the same argument, minus the interest. It does not come in effect until 3 years later when the factory warranty runs out. Who says you will still have the truck then.
I plan on keeping mine a long time, but you never know.

Isn’t that a decision everyone has to make right? Someone can own a vehicle for one day, one week, 10 years. I run out on mileage long before time on warranties. Buying the warranty closer to the end of the factory warranty is normally 6-800.00+ more than during the original purchase date. Factor that into your math as well.

My GMC for the extended warranty was 1800.00 at time of purchase. If I waited for 5years or 100k miles it was going to be 2600.00.

I chose not to go with the extended warranty. This is not my DD.

Just to be clear, I normally wouldn’t buy an extended warranty unless it was a certified pre-owned and came with the deal and paid minimum for it. (Like what @Boerseun said) This was the first time in my life I have ever used a vehicle warranty. Unfortunately it was on my Toyota. Crap happens to any make or model. I just was lucky this time.

I'm not sure if my situation is the same as yours but I bought my vehicle used with right under 23,000 miles on it.

Dealer first offered the platinum warranty with 80k miles coverage for $1,200. I declined and he automatically dropped it to $600. Which I thought about and accepted as I thought it was a good deal.

I originally was going to decline because the manufacturer's warranty should be enough for Toyotas.

Question, if I bought my truck without the extended warranty can I still get one? Or is the cat out of the bag.

You can still buy an extended warrantee until the original 3 year - 36,000 miles warrantee has expired.

The general consensus seems to be the Toyota Platinum Warrantee is the one to buy.
