We had a speaker at work from On Target Living. I’ve started trying their stuff. Riding my bike for exercise. Seems to be helping. I think a big key is setting a goal that you can achieve then adding incremental goals as the prior ones become habit.

Some Mods :) See build thread for details
    1. Which vitamins or herbs are you consuming to supplement your needs? - Multivitamin, Vitamin D and Fish Oil are highly recommended
    2. What are you eating that makes a difference in your life? - More fat and protein
    3. What do you stay away from that has proven beneficial? - cut carbs way down. Don't drink your calories. Only drink water, beer and whiskey. That is all that is needed in life.
    4. How much is your gym membership and what shall I look for as I join one? I don’t have room at my house for any equipment so please don’t “help” with that info until I move - Orange Theory. Love it. $149 a month unlimited. You can do twice a week at 99 per month. Run, row and weights. Full workout.
    5. Is the gym/workout thread a more beneficial way to gain these bits of information? - Its a bit slow in there.

We are both in our mid-50's. At 5'10", weighing 208 in 2013 was a wake up call for me, especially when my doc put me on a drug to lower my cholesterol....my "bad" LDL was 214 and the "good" HDL was 43. I also was borderline high blood-pressure. So I started getting more active and we both changed our diets to eating healthier (organic, very few processed, GMO free, etc.). Anything dairy is now low- or fat-free. Since I'm borderline lactose-intolerant, anyway, I'm basically meat/fish-eating vegan.

    1. Which vitamins or herbs are you consuming to supplement your needs? - Multivitamin, Calcium, Fish Oil, Aspirin
    2. What are you eating that makes a difference in your life? - High-fiber breads (whole wheat), avacados, nuts, organic and non-GMO,
    3. What do you stay away from that has proven beneficial? Cigarettes, White bread, processed meats, fried foods (especially fast food), soft drinks, alcohol
As everyone nears 50 (and then starts down the other side), getting yearly blood screens is very important. (Much better to find stage 1 cancer than stage 4 and much better to notice cholesterol creeping up then to have for a heart attack, etc.) Also a test called PSA helps detect prostrate issues which is something all guys need to keep track of.

Today, my big gut is gone and I'm at 185....would like to get down to 180 this year. My BP is normal and "bad" cholesterol is down to 151 and "good" is up to 51. I'll probably stop the fish oil pills when they run out....latest studies tell us most in the pills are super-diluted with water, anyhow. (We do try to get at least one fish meal in a week.....halibut or salmon, to get those good fish oils)

    I think moderation is the key....sure sometimes I have a double-bacon cheeseburger but that's no longer 2-3 times a week...now more like 2 times a month...during a "cheat day" or special occasion.

Supplements are dangerous and vitamins are unnecessary if you eat right.

There may be like 10 people on the planet that eat a well enough rounded daily diet to not be deficient in something. Yes that is an exaggeration but so is your statement.
Maybe you could elaborate a little more. Protein is a supplement... is that dangerous?

3 years ago at 51 years old, 6' 2" and 267lbs I decided to get active again. I also quit drinking alcohol immediately and 6 months later I dropped a 3 liter a day Diet Coke habit. In fact I drink water, unsweet iced tea, and a Powerade Zero occasionally to replace electrolytes.
I do take supplements in the form of a multi vitamin, calcium, magnesium, fish oil, and vitamin D.
Colesterol was over 300, now in the 130-140 range and my weight bounces around 195. In the summer can I get down to 185ish.
Quitting a life-long beer guzzling habit was easy, quitting the Diet Cokes was HARD. After 2.5 years I still want one.

Bit of background: I'm 29 and have been working in a trade notorious for destroying your health, working way too many long hours, and have been eating like crap. I'm working on turning that all around, getting back into the sports I love and making a career change. I'm currently 5'6", 200lbs. In my prime as a multi-sport athlete 10 years ago, I was 170 - 175lbs.
    1. Which vitamins or herbs are you consuming to supplement your needs? Multivitamin, Fish oil
    2. What are you eating that makes a difference in your life? Lean protein such as chicken, lots of rice, loads of fruits and veggies. To help with sweet drink cravings, my woman makes jugs of flavoured water; strawberries, mangoes etc cut up and tossed in the water. No sugar.
    3. What do you stay away from that has proven beneficial? Junk food in general. One cheat day a week but other than that I try to behave. I also stopped drinking my daily iced tea. I save soft drinks etc for treats now. Water, black coffee, tea, scotch, hard cider and the very occasional beer are pretty well it now.
    4. How much is your gym membership and what shall I look for as I join one? I don’t have room at my house for any equipment so please don’t “help” with that info until I move $660 Canadian pesos per year. I have full access of a huge facility; pools, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, indoor running track, weight room/gym, raquetball/sqaush courts, indoor b-ball/v-ball courts.
    5. Is the gym/workout thread a more beneficial way to gain these bits of information? It's slow, but feel free to post up. The more the merrier!
