For those of you driving in cold climates.... can cold and caked ice damage your suspension? I heard a strange pop earlier and maybe it’s in my head but I am thinking I can feel a trougher ride and harder hitting minor bumps.

Am I just imagining this? Am I just being a nervous Nancy?

I have a @ToyTec Lifts BOSS 2.0 with 30,000 on them and haven’t had any issues until now, which might or might not be an issue. I’ve done some decently rough off road but no issues that I know of. I looked under there with a flashlight but there’s so much built up ice that I can’t really see anything out of the norm.

    @SR5TRDTUNDRA @ColoradoTJ @LOTSOFTOYS @jberry813
You guys have the ice and cold issue. Any thoughts?

There is always the possibility that ice can break something. Never happened to me in my lifetime. I did break a leaf spring once hunting, but I was getting after it with three large deer in the bed.

    Here is a fine example:

This is how we started out....
    20140307_171024_zps0089db64.jpg

Then we got into a blizzard in Durango, CO and had to do Wolf Creek Pass. Stopped for a bite...
    20140307_213925_zps28d3ad7c.jpg

This is fueling up and spending 30 min hammering ice off the truck. To get out of the Tundra, we had to Bo Duke that shit to get out since there was so much ice caked up on the running boards. Something had to be done, I was on the bump stops on the rear axle due to all the extra weight from the ice on the truck and front of the trailer. We drove for 8 hours like this.

    20140308_000300_zpsa11cccbc.jpg

Now I have seen Coil springs snap. I remember the last time I was in CA, Dragos28 had a front coil spring that broke. It can happen especially if your compressing the spring to contact each coil wrap.

Mark was that pop early in the morning?

Here when the road gets wet from warmer weather and gets really cold at night, the next morning when I put it in drive and get off my drive way I can feel and hear a pop from my shocks when my truck trops from sidewalk like they have ice and ice is breaking off.
But my ride is same doesn’t feel rougher.
Only happens when it gets -25 or below. And I also have the oem suspension trd off-road

May be different from other suspension, and I’ve never had issues with suspension with any of my other vehicles I used to have in the cold.
Hope that helps a little lol.

I don't think it would be the cause. Most likely something else. See if you can check underneath when it's day time.

The truck had been sitting all day at work and it was cold, but definitely been colder. It was around 3 degrees and puking snow all day with 30 mph winds. I typically let it run for a few just to get the inside temps up but that wouldn’t warm any suspension. It had been sitting for a good 10 hours and was caked from the morning snow but that’s pretty a typical day. I turned out of the parking lot and heard a pop from the passenger side, it almost sounded like I ran over something but I wasn’t aware of anything in the road. The roads have been plowed all day but it’s never a clean road after when it’s been hammering down all day. There were the normal ridges and intermittent bumps that are normal after a shitty plow job but I felt a little more harsh hits than I typically feel.

I bet it’s all in my head but I’m hearing strange creaks and noises now that I don’t normally notice. Mornings always seem a little more harsh but tonight seemed more intense. Again, it’s probably in my head so I’ll test it tomorrow and look when I have some light.

Thanks for the responses to you and Chris!!

Cold weather is cold weather regardless of the state. I’m hoping it was just an ice chunk breaking off....after all, I didn’t see any obvious signs of anything damaging. It was just something I don’t normally experience, and with the cold I’m assuming anything is possible

Forget the 3.0, it's overkill. And, everyone knows the only frozen, altitude approved suspension is ADS. Everything else pops and creaks and snaps in half. :spending: .:anonymous:

Not unless you take on a ice Boulder. I have buried vehicles in more ice and snow than I care to admit. Normally the issues can be with damaging the abs sensors or packing enough snow and ice in the rims to cause a big feeling of a unbalanced tire. Also you can jam enough snow and ice up into the brake calipers that your brakes barely work or don't till you get the vehicle thawed out. But to accomplish these you have to go thru some stupid amounts of snow and hitting drifts with quite a bit of speed

I have that typical popping noise from my calipers, and I'm certain my rear is that cracked spring shifting. (1 leaf). I doubt it's ice. With those mods, I would at least clean the truck so you can lift the front end and do a front shake down. I bookmarked that ADS place, awesome, and noticed front and center of all the trucks, was of course a Toyota.

Your tires are a lot stiffer in very cold weather also. That will contribute to the rougher ride you are feeling.

I've experienced ice build up on my rims before and can cause some wobble. Never had issues with suspensions.
