NEWB with my first Tundra and questions

I just acquired an 05 SR5 A/C with a V6 and Manual trans. The Truck was out of VA and I drove it back to my home state of Georgia last weekend. After spending 8 hours in the drivers seat I've come to learn that some of the cats are bad (the CEL came on mid way)and the exhaust has had it.

What have other owners done with trying to find all 4 cats from one mfg (other than Toyota). It seems there are a lot of players in the Exhaust manafold-cat combo but the secondary units seem to be very few. Instead of mixing and matching manufacturers I wanted to go with one so that everything would fit correctly. DEC is the only company I am finding and their setup is $1250, ouch!!. Have you mixed and matched mfg with success?

First are you SURE the cats are bad? you sure its not a o2 sensor or sensors gone bad first.


you have a few options some are legal some aren't.

legal part first. best way is just replace cats and suck up the cost. reason you have to use toyota ones its the way the damn ECM is programmed. you cant use free flow cats either check engine light will always be on again, do to the programming.

Now if your state doesnt have emissions check, you can cut the cats out ( or get a test pipes) then you piggyback the o2 sensors, a o2 simulator to trick the ecm to think your cats are fine therefor the check engine light will stay off.. I have done this to my tacoma v6 (3.4 5vz-fe) for 5 years and no problems at all.

Magnaflow makes cats that do work on toyotas and are carb certified replaced one on my old '03 no cel's and passed New York state inspection.

Welcome from Smithfield, VA. I had a 2000 Tundra with that 3.4 L and had 270K on her when I hit a deer and totaled it. That engine was SO reliable, still ran like new.

A couple of updates:
I got lucky with the exhaust and cats. It turned out the the heat shield on the front drivers side was the culprit for all the noise I heard. It was quickly removed.

I've made my first bone head move (wont' be the last) with the Tundra. The TPMS light has been on since I took delivery a weeks ago. Since the pressure was good I thought it was an aging sensor (still might be). I failed to notice that the spare tire was missing. Thankfully new tires have arrived and I found someone local with a set of period correct (69465) Toyota Rims replacing the steelies. I'll save one steelie and the best tire and hope that I've got 5 decent TPMS sensor that can be programmed.

Welcome from a newbie in Rhode Island. First make sure you have no leaks, second make sure O2 sensors are working, if you have a computer you can watch the cross counts, and of course engine is running good and well tuned. Are you just smelling some odor? So I even smell some odor in my 2000 V8 usually under heavy load going up hills in NY. Before I come back I fill up with a Sunoco 91 octane ETHANOL FREE. NO SMELL on the way back, ummmmmmmm.

 

Hey Zombie, A fellow Rhode Islander here transplanted in Georgia, Grew up in Cumberland.

Ok, so I got past the exhaust and tires and all seem to be fine there. Now that I have driven the truck for a couple of weeks I am isolating another issue. While moving at slow speed 2-3 mph the whole truck shakes. Normally during acceleration/deceleration you move past the 2-3 mph fairly quick so the problem isn't really noticed. Sitting in stop and go traffic it is noticeable. I wouldn't call it a violent movement but the whole body and noticeably inside the cabin the shifter shakes back and forth. Originally I thought it was the old tires but now I have new tires and rims. During normally acceleration you feel it briefly and by the time you've gotten to 10mph it is unnoticeable. One other clue is that the transmission doesn't need to be engaged and the clutch could be depressed or not. Possibilities Ive considered are wheel bearing or maybe a drive shaft support bearing (If there is one)? Any thoughts.

 

It's not the engine shaking is it? like a misfire. Clutch shatter, because flywheel is uneven? But you say that doesn't matter, just thought I'd throw that in there. How's the tire's? Tires can look good until you rub your hand over them and feel belts that have shifted. Are those 4 piston calipers not releasing? U-joints not good? Center support bearing shot? I would pick each tire up one at a time and then shake it top to bottom and left to right. There should be no play. Not counting the fronts turning, but still no play. This checks ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings and wheel bearings that are worn. I live in Middletown, but have been on the wife for 15 years now to move up by Cumberland. Preferable by Arcadia Park were I mountain bike and hike, and all the places to kayak over there. My wife is from this Island, I'm from upstate NY and this Island life isn't for me. I love the seafood though. All my buddies will be at Atlanta this year for the 31st ZCON. Not me....I did the one in Texas last year, came back with a trophy, I'm good for now.
