I have seen some tunneau cover systems that ask if I have the deck rail system. I have added unistrut and have been told it's virtually the same thing. So the question is do I say yes to having the deck system or are there enough differences to be cautious of an install requiring the deck rails?

Use the rail system to avoid clamping to the bed. I added the rails to my truck and used them to secure my cover, its an improvement.

I have the custom unistrut installed. Im making sure it is going to work exactly the same as the deck rails.

It will, you may have to supply your own T-nuts if your strut is oversized.

Different covers use different types of brackets to tie the cover down, so it depends on what cover you get. Some covers come with brackets that you have to use to lower the rail system, while some comes with little machined brackets that slide into the rail and then the cover latches to that, while yet others clamp to the rail itself. Are the unistruts the same size as the OEM rails? If not, the ones that comes with the brackets might not work well.
