I'm going to South Lake Tahoe next weekend and was wondering if I need to have chains/cables? I have been told that CHP may require them at any time. I have 4x4 and stock Michelin AT tires. Am I good with just that?

You’re good. You won’t need chains.

Unless you’re going Offroad onto some trails, I bet you won’t even need 4wd.

You should be fine. I’ve never chained up a 4wd on the pavement around here unless I was plowing. If there are controls on the roadways, they typically just waive any 4wd vehicles through.

We haven’t had any real weather this winter anyway...:(

@nishibot, any chance you'd be able to do a short off-road run on Sunday 2/25? That date works for me, and I'm trying once more to find a route near Temecula based on my recall that you want to drive something near enough to civilization that your family (or son) could comfortably accompany you-?

I realize that date will come close on the heels of this S.L.T. trip though-- so maybe you and they will be all "driven out".

You probably won’t need them. But whenever it’s snowing or there’s snow on the ground I bring a set of chains with me just in case. Sometimes law enforcement will just want to make sure you have them. At least that’s the case with my local mountains.

My bad Steve. I've been doing a little bit work to my house on the weekends, I haven't been checking on the site as often. 100% with @joonbug on the chains. @15whtrd is also right, it never hurts to be be extra prepared. I like @sunniers MaxTrax, I need those in my life :(

    Have fun Tahoe lucky :)
