As title suggests 2011 Tundra horn doesn't work and it's NOT the fuse. Seems like if you disengage the steering wheel the horn will work intermittently
    Any Suggestions?, thanks!

Husky Mats, Trailer brake controller, Tonneau cover, other goodies coming soon.
Your problem is caused by a bad "spiral cable". This is a cable inside your steering column that wraps around the internal rotating part of the steering column and contains the wiring for your horn and any other steering-wheel mounted buttons or controls that rotate with the wheel, such as the Bluetooth control buttons and the radio/audio system controls (and maybe the cruise control stalk).

The spiral cable rides on a plastic sleeve inside the steering column. Unfortunately, on some of the 2011 Tundras there was a rough place on the sleeve that wears through the cable insulation and eventually into the conductors. The first thing to go is the horn function. Once it happens the first time, the horn might work intermittently a few times, but soon it works no more at all as the rough place wears completely through the conductor and leaves an open circuit.

Toyota knows this and when it happened to my Tundra right after I bought it with around 82,000 miles on it, they replaced the cable and sleeve under warranty at no cost to me. Otherwise, I think it's about an $800 job at the dealer because it requires that the entire steering column come out of the vehicle so that the rough sleeve can be pulled off and replaced. If I had to pay for it out of my pocket, I believe that I'd check to see if I could buy just the cable and remove the outer covering of the column and get to the cable without pulling the column out of the truck. And if so, then try to find the rough place on the sleeve and smooth it out then put in the new cable. But having never seen the inside of a Tundra steering column, I may be talking out my a$$, and that method could be totally not feasible.

Had that happen on my 2012 with 50,000 miles on it, dealer looked and found it was the clock spring, wanted just over $500 to fix. I figured I could put a switch and new horn on for a lot less than that. Ended up trading it in. Couldn't justify that kind of money for something I never used anyway. And where I live doesn't do state inspections on passenger vehicles.

Clockspring/spiral cable. Mine went out a few months ago. Intermittent horn. I found a factory one on ebay for about half the price of the dealer. About $125 if I remember correctly. It took about 30min to swap out. The steering column does not need to come out. Just the wheel and some plastic covers. I had a puller for the steering wheel. If you don't, rent/borrow one. It is an easy job. There are also $20 ones on ebay, but I hear those only last a year or so.

Mine grenaded itself inside the steering wheel. At least from what the dealer said. My horn quit working about a year into owning the truck. They replaced it while I waited. It took them under an hour. I walked up while he was doing it and he just marked the steering wheel where it was pulled it set the new one in place and put the wheel back on. Looked pretty simple.

So I saw a video and the clockspring assembly looked like it only had two connectors and they went to the airbag. Is THAT what needs to be replaced or is it a cable assembly? Can someone post a P/N or link that won't disappear (like links to current eBay listing disappear as soon as the listing is over)?

Hmm will have to check into this cockspring/spiral cable. Horn recently went out. Still works with panic button.

I believe it is your clock spring as well. The part is ~$120 from the dealer, I don't know how much install is. I replaced mine with a $12 replacement clock spring from Amazon. Even though everything is fine my airbag light is on and its $100 for Toyota to clear it. I found that even though my battery was disconnected, by leaving my key in the ignition during the swap it causes the airbag light to be triggered. Swapping it out was very easy but maybe not worth it to everyone.

You cannot see because the ribbon is completely enclosed.
I followed a video I found on YouTube. It is very easy and takes about 10 minutes. Be sure to disconnect your battery, they recommend 30 min prior, before starting. Also, make sure your key is not in the ignition.
The same clock springs are available on eBay. Just search for the part number which is shared by many Toyotas

Thank you sir. Definitely cheap enough to go ahead and swap with the hope that is the actual problem. If not not a big loss. Sounds like it is the cause. Just weird the horn is the only thing that doesn’t work on the steering wheel controls.

Hmm the horn does have a fuse to itself under the hood. Will check that before replacing the clock spring.

Not that this has any helpful info at all. But one of the actual horns went on my truck while my dad owned it. He replaced it but with the same tone as the other working one. So now my truck has a single toned horn that sounds like a dying baby sheep. :anonymous:There’s no moral to my story.

Hi, my 2012 horn isn’t working either. Ive started looking on how to fix it but cant find any definitive detailed videos or “how to” google searches. Is it the same as your 2011 to fix? Id appreciate your input. Thank you

this just happened to Mech's here in NJ.. they replaced the spring so only the horn works now, but no steering wheel controls.. would love to get the cruise control up and running. Is there anything we should be looking for after the new clockspring is installed that would prevent the rest of the controls from working. Also set off the airbag light so i'm assuming they had the keys in.

I'm a new member and came here cause this fix to my same issue was among the first to come up. I believe I bought the same air bag you did off Amazon but I'm curious if you've had any issues with the clock spring? I'm installing mine today. I might have an irrational concern of random air bag deployment.
