Ain't this a bitch....I walked out to my truck this morning (2017 Tundra Platinum 4x4 w/ 4800 miles) and started the 'ol girl up. The first thing I notice is the check engine light is on and a message stating that the traction control is off. This is weird because when I parked last night everything was in perfect working order. I get to the office and look to Google to see if I can determine the problem. The only thing I could find is that the codes(?) may be jacked up. I waste no time and head down to the Toyota dealership to have them take a look. After an hour of waiting the service manager tells me that a squirrel or some type of rodent chewed through one of the wiring harnesses and it's setting off the "knock" sensors (?). He said that it is not covered under warranty and that I would have to call my insurance company and file a claim. Now I am waiting for an adjuster to go to the dealership and see if he agrees with their assessment and wait for everyone to agree on the repair cost. Today being Thursday, no one is going to come out until Monday at the earliest. The service manager said it is a big deal to replace the harness(s) due to their location and I will probably be without a truck for a week or so. Not very happy......

Has to really suck. You need to figure out how and where those rodents got in. Home or at work. upload_2018-2-1_13-10-5.jpg You sure don't want to go through this again.

Sorry to hear that, unfortunately I had a similar experience where a mouse chewed through a couple wires. The fortunate part is that my insurance covered it. Best of luck to you.

The adjuster would hopefully ask to see it too before signing off on any work.

Those little f’ers sure can cause a buttload if issues.

    Squirrels are shot on sight.

The home we just purchased was able to fit my trucks inside, and this was a requirement on this home.

I learned in Toyota tech training (Glen Burnie, Maryland) that they chew on the wires because they're coated in peanut oil. It's used on the wires when the harness is assembled. I work at a local dealership as a tech and have seen it many, many times in my 13 years with Toyota. Insurance covers it here.

Sounds to me like they need to come up with a better lube than that. I wonder if it would help washing the underside of the truck really well. Maybe spray fluid film all over everything! I bet they won’t like that crap

I shoot the cap out of squirrels and rats around our place. I also spray my engine bay with peppermint oil to keep them out.

...not a squirrel, but rodent all the same. This little bastard chewed holes in all the reservoir tanks first before any wiring, so by the time the lights came on the dash, he already caused $3K+ in damages on the Mrs’ work truck. Thank god for her company cc and I didn’t have to pay, I would’ve been bent.

I don't know if anyone said but rodents are attracted to the plastic on the wires. Happened to 2 guys at my job. We work off the river. Plenty of creatures are running around there.

That piece along the back of the engine [firewall insulation] is $86 plus shipping, TRD filter service gauge is another $27 including shipping. I know this because my firewall looks exactly like that. Apparently, peppermint oil is like Febreeze for my little rodent. I've even put out red pepper under the shed where it's parked with no luck. Sticky traps don't seem to catch it either. Those cute bait stations aren't helping so I just threw out several of the baits under where the truck sits.

I recommend the Gamo Whisper, a suppressed air rifle that shoots the standard lead pellet at 1000fps. I think the newer model does even better. Rats and rabbits can be taken with less power but squirrels are solid muscle so you have to hit them hard.

There is a product called Critter Ritter spay all your wiring and in all the wheel wells once a year! They got my 2013 Tacoma, Toyota used a soy based product in the insulation of the wiring and they love eating it? That Critter Ritter stuff works great trust me...
