We got tired of sunglasses rolling out of the worthless rubber Mat tray so I am building this custom tray. It will be held in place with 3 tabs and possibly Velcro. For my use, I would keep wife son and my sunglasses, small binoculars, small pack of Kleenex, maybe some other random item like son's toy.
What do you think about the height?
Too tall or cut it down? Should I make a lid?

Looks like plywood and bondo...should look nice painted! I fabricated an overhead console for the radio in my Rhino much the same way and sprayed it with a black textured paint. Came out looking really nice, and has lasted several years, and a lot of nasty trails!
I'd prefer a bit less depth. Just enough lip to hold your stuff in place. I wouldn't want to have to dig around in it
And I also love the smell of sawdust in the morning! (I'm a self-employed woodworker)

To hold items like that it could probably be half as tall. I like it though!

Nice but agree with the previous posters; I'd make it about half that height.

I did cut it down a half inch. I think i will cruise around with it in raw form a while to decide if i want it cut down more or not. Was thinking make a lift off lid but only use it during the summer.
I do keep one pair of glasses in the over head sunglass holder but i always have two pair plus a pair of safety glasses too and i like this because we dont have to go digging in the center console or glovebox for these items.

What do you guys think is a good finish for this? I was thinking rubberized under coating or spray in Bed liner?... maybe a lighter gray color so it won't get so hot in summer?

Man, that's gotta be the most unused space in my truck. I sit so far back it doesn't even register as a storage space. It's basically just a styling dimple at this point lol. I'm glad at least someone is using it!

Carbon fiber spay paint/plastic dip paint job could work.

Pick a decent silver to match the dash. Same with a black. You could probably get damn close to a respectable color match.

    It even sounds fun!

Hes a plastic dip diy vid

Theres plenty of different variations to play around with and keep the cost low enough to not have to live with it if its a bust.
