    Hello all,
My name is Monte and i purchased a 2017 TRD SR5 back in August.
Within a few weeks I started noticing some oddities about the shifting. The list is long, but here are a few of the most common issues I have...
    - every morning (engine cold) backing out of garage i get a delayed shift from Reverse to Drive. Pulling onto my street, tranny seems to be slipping from 1-2 and 2-3. RPMS will run up to 2300 or so while the tranny is only slightly grabbing and then slowly fully engage,(sometimes with a thud). If i hold a steady throttle while its slipping, it will start pulsing (lunging) almost like I'm goosing the throttle back and forth.
    - While driving, it occasionally will shift through all gears very quickly then downshift again. Almost like its confused. I'll get "hard" shifts mainly between 1-2, sometimes in other gears. Occasional hard downshifting as well.

I have had in to the dealer twice now. They do seem to be trying to work with me on this, but they have not been successful in duplicating the issues on a steady basis to create a strong diagnosis in order to fix it. They recommend i continue to drive it until it gets worse, which it seems to be doing.

Has anyone in the Tundra world experienced any of these issues?
    Thanks, Monte

It takes the ECU time to learn your driving patterns.
I always wait for the RPM’s to drop after initial start then go and drive easy until it’s at operating temps. All Toyota’s won’t shift as smoothly when it’s not warmed up. My Corolla does the same if I drive it hard when it’s not at operating temps.

    Also, welcome from CO.

They checked fluid level the first time I brought it in.
That was my initial though as well

Did you have to leave the truck with them for a while to cool enough to check the level? Assuming you don’t live within 2 blocks of the dealer.

Actually left with them for a couple days and explained to them how to mimic what I do when I drive it. They observed no issues. I then drove with their tech. It do some of the issues, but less apparent.
They are getting more frequent and apparent as some time goes on. I'm thankful I got the extended warranty.
Just wish I could enjoy my new truck more!!

Hes had the truck since august. Let it run till the vacuum drops off yes but no way you should have to wait until it hits warm temps for it to act normal. Something is wrong.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

On my first 30k mile transmission inspection, they said the fluids needed topped off in the transmission, almost a qt.

I am a strong believer in letting a vehicle warm up a bit before taking off. It all starts every morning just shifting from R to D. I'll get as much as a 5 delay. Then when I am just pulling to the end of the driveway (30ft) I get a slight delayed shift at 5mph from 1st to 2nd gear.
Anyway, I do appreciate any and all input. I do have a video I'll try to post that shows the tach and speed as it's slipping and "lunging".

    Having trouble uploading the video.
I did send it to my dealer service adviser the other day. He saw it and forwarded to their lead tech. Haven't heard back yet!
I will keep you all posted!

OK, hopefully they actually did check your level with the proper procedure when they had it those days. These dipstick free transmissions are somewhat complex to check the level on, not hard, but there is a procedure that has to be followed closely. That said, they SHOULD be experts at it.

Delayed shifting / higher shift points when cold is normal with mine, but even stone cold I don’t get a noticable delay in shifting from reverse to drive / drive to reverse, or any surging like you are experiencing.

A video is a great idea, best of luck in getting this resolved quickly so you can enjoy your Tundra, rather than being frustrated by it.

i have at least a dozen situations right now with the day job where that would be a perfect response. however, i'm sure HR and the ombudsman would be calling within 5 seconds of my using it.

New to the forum guys! Specifically looking for people that had the same problem. 2018 tundra with 22K miles bought new. Started about 8 months ago. I noticed that after starting and backing up it takes about 2 seconds to engage the tranny. Then it from R to D it takes 2-3 seconds. If I try to take off quickly there is a shudder then it will go. It doesn't matter if I let it warm up for 20 mins. It happens upon first movement. After say driving for 30 mins the shifting problem is not as significant. For those that might say this is somewhat normal cold again I do let the truck warm up. I also would have to disagree as I have the 2018 sequoia with the same powertrain that will shift without any delay. I've tried to replicate with speedy shifting in the sequoia cold it shifts and engages perfectly. My concern is that this will be a worsening problem. If anybody can speculate what the problem is I will go to Toyota with some type of argument.

    Thanks guys.

If my trans did that, I'd have it flushed. Try some better trans fluid than toyota ws, perhaps this:

I’ve been monitoring the transmission temps on my 2017 and 2019 Tundras for the last couple of weeks while towing. For fun, I hooked the scanner up to the 4Runner this morning and took it for a ride. One thing that strikes me is how long it takes all these transmissions to come up to the “normal” operating temperature. In the winter weather, I literally drove 15-18 miles on relatively high speed rural roads and then was on an interstate for 5 miles before the transmission gets to 190ish on the 2017 or 205ish on the 2019. On “shorter” trips empty, I doubt the transmission ever gets to the operating temp. On the 4Runner, I drove around for 30 minutes this AM and made a couple stops and covered 20-25 miles total on lower speed roads. The transmission temp never got above 125 degrees on the 4 Runner. All that said, I’ve never had any shifting issues, towing or not, in either of the Tundras regardless of transmission temp.

my 19 is doing this same thing. R to D there is a shutter then a soft engage. Hard shift from 1st to 2nd, this is more like a slip then a hard engage. Has anyone had any success with toyota on this?
    Thanks
