Wondering if anyone has disabled the orange DRL on their 2016 SR5 (NOT a limited or 1974)Tundra. I have seen photos of how to disable it on a 2015 with removing the drivers side kick panel and cutting a grey wire. However, when I removed the kicker panel on my 2016 the wiring looks different. Any information/instructions would be appreciated.

From what I read cutting this grey wire will disable the DRL but the light will still work as a signal light.

Please post some photos if possible.

Thanks for all your guys help with this!

Well after searching around on the internet, help that was given to me by another member, and me searching more on my truck I think I found the grey wire to cut.

For those wanting to do the same thing this is what you need to do:

Remove the kicker panel on the drivers side.
Remove the dash board bolt that was uncovered when you removed the kicker panel. Should need a 10mm socket to remove it.
With a little force put out the dash board where the switches are at.
Once you have this pulled out look behind the dash board side you pulled out and on the right hand side you will see the grey wire you will need to cut.

For photos look at this link that was provided to me by another member.

    http://www.tundratalk.net/forums/tundra-lighting-electrical/489137-drl-disable-2015-a.html

For those of you that have done this please let me know if this is correct and that this will disable the orange DRL but will keep them working as turn signals.

    Thanks everyone!

I like the DRL's though. Changed mine to white instead of amber.

I replaced my flasher assembly with part number 81980-0C020 shop around a bit though because some dealers are pretty expensive, I got mine for around $60 shipped. Everything functions normal just no DRLs. I can't take credit for this, I saw it on either this site or another.

I did the same. Same process as above, just no cutting of any wires involved. Replaces the OEM assembly relay and now -

Off- no headlights, no drls , no fogs, no rear lights
1 click - no headlights, drls on, no fogs, rear lights and license plate lights on
2 clicks - all lights are on (fogs still adjustable)

Bringing this back up. Ok, my question is, is the grey wire you need to cut under the dash, the same grey wire at the drl bulb socket. It's a lot easier to cut it, than to start pulling kick panel and lower dash, not a fan of that. Bit the is 3 wires to the bulb socket. Hopefully I can cut it instead.

My truck came with the dealer installed led strips that are below the headlights, I can turn them on without headlights on, for a led drl, but they clash with the amber drl's.

    Try this on for size:
    1. With truck off, engage e-brake.
    2. Turn truck on.
    3. Take off e-brake
    4. DRLs are now off!
We will need to do this each time you turn on your truck, but eliminates having to cut wires if you don't want too.

Yep, but I want them off all the time.

This is with e brake on. Just led drl's.
    IMG_20171227_164305071.jpg

This is as soon as ebrake comes off. Both, Amber and LED's.
    IMG_20171227_164330268.jpg

I just want the amber drl's off permanently. Just hoping I can cut a wire at the bulb.

based on what you are saying, the DRL should stay off until:
1- you stop the car and engage the e-brake ...
    2- turn the car off
3- start the car and then disengage the e-brake.
    is that right?

I know some people that won't engage the e-brake when on a flat spot. they just turn the car off and put it in PARK.
wonder if it does the same thing (No DRL). it is basically same as what you are saying except in step 1 you don't engage the e-brake and also no need for step 3.
This would unintentionally turn the DRL off. either way sounds like a loophole in the design. lol

without having the wiring diagram and in general ...
in some cars there is wire to control the DRL. if the control wire is powered it turns off the DRL. for example the control wire can be connected to headlights or the high beams, this way when the headlights are ON or if the high beam is ON, it will turns the DRL OFF.

it would be an easy test. you will need a voltmeter or voltage tester.
btw, I am just answering the technical part of your question and am not recommending to turn the DRLs OFF obviously they are for visibility and safety reasons ... they are mandatory in Canada and i assume maybe in some or all? states in the US ... at least mandatory for new(er) cars ...

come to think of it, Tundra DRLs are also turn signal and that may change things a bit since you don't want to disable the turn signal! also I don't know if the bulbs are single or double filament. You may have to experiment with the voltmeter and see if you can control it at the bulb assembly or not!

Thanks. I know they are for safety, but hell I'm running 2 sets of drl's, one has to go. I may just take the kick panel and lower dash off and cut the gray wire.

You could depin that wire instead of cutting it. Will make it a lot easier to go back to original configuration later on if you choose to do so. I just recently installed 2018 lights and disabled my amber drl's. It's the gray wire that was between the white with black stripe and the green it's removed in this pic, 5th down from the top left IMG_5809.jpg

Are your ambers still coming on when the headlights are fully turned on though? I installed the 2018 Sport LEDs, I don't have ambers while the led drl is on but once I flip the full headlight on, ambers light up as well. This is with the grey wire clipped..

No not at all. the ambers don’t come on whatsoever unless I use turn signals.

Hmmm. Well I'm lost then haha. I installed OEM 2018 Sport led headlights with headlight revolution harness and DRL adapter, as I did not have factory DRL, just amber parking lights. Clipped the thin grey wire and still have amber turn signals lighting up full time when the headlights are on

This is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm going to do this mod today (2017 SR5 CM w/ 38k miles).

What got me here is having a front signal light go out yesterday and then, upon inspection, I found evidence of overheating / discoloration on both signal sockets.

I'm going to replace both amber signal bulbs and sockets with OEM and then do the DRL disable mod to hopefully eliminate changing bulbs and/or damaged sockets on a regular basis due to overheating.

Did you have a non-oem bulb or TX heat?

Did the job yesterday. I bought my truck used (22k miles or so) but both bulbs had OEM labeling.

We do have TX heat but it's east TX so not the kind of temps you'd see in other parts of TX out west.

The bulbs and sockets were 10 minutes but it took me over an hour to de-pin the DRL wire with a safety pin. Then I shrink wrapped the end and zip tied it out of the way. I'm going to pick up a proper de-pinning tool for future use. All lights tested great with no DRL.

This thread and video were vital to the DRL mod:

I did this mod yesterday too for the exact same reason, looks like a lot of heat with the DRL on. Was about to give up and cut the wire and the extractor finally worked (or rather I finally figured out how to use it correctly).

Had I really understood how the pin is held in I may have tried a needle first, not sure what other use I'll have for these.

I haven't looked inside the drl housing but if my car is idling for a while, the drl cover gets pretty warm ... Once you drive the cover cools off but I'm not sure if the air flow can impact the inside as much.

As an FYI, here's a pic of the damaged socket / old bulb next to the new on (new top, old bottom):

iirc, the drl bulb has 2 filaments. No?
I think when the headlights are on, the drl is turned off but the low power filament inside the drl (parking light) stays on. Or maybe when you start the engine and still in PARK and turn on parking/side lights, the lower power filament turns on. But as soon as emergency brake is released the main (high power filament) drl light comes on.
