T minus 1 day for eye surgery. I’m scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday for the procedure. Pretty excited but also have gotten progressively more anxious as the day approaches. I had a follow up exam at my regular eye dr to get a full eye test again and my corneas are slightly thinner than what’s ideal. I had a long conversation with the surgeon yesterday and they are going to do a couple more tests before surgery tomorrow. However, he told me to be prepared for PRK vs Lasik in the event my corneas ARE to thin. I’m ok with PRK as well, the recovery is just longer.

I’ll update tomorrow how this all goes down.

Yep, that's it. I do remember the smell of burnt hair as well. Don't worry that's just your eyeball being burnt by a laser...

I had LASIK done in 2004, pretty happy with the way it came out. Lately though, seems like my eyesight is getting worse. I'll probably have to get it redone which is pretty normal from what I hear about LASIK. I think I would have rather done PRK, but it was was pretty new then. Wonder if I can do PRK now over my LASIK, anybody know?

PRK method is usually used on folks with dry eye issues or thin corneas. If the cornea is too thin then the corneal flap is a no go. PRK method removes the outer layer of the cornea which takes longer to heal. Not sure about a PRK redo. Some people do have Lasik re-done on occasion though not too "normal" At the time my Lasik Wavefront surgery was the most advanced at the time...very costly $2600. There were cheaper methods but didn't want to go cheap on my eyes. Know your Lasik doc's background. My lasik doc was also contracted with the US Army. Trained blind as a bat, but smart, soldiers and "made" them into chopper pilots.

I had PRK back in 02 or 03, at the time only one approved for airborne operations. After 3 months my eyes stabilized at 20/15 and 20/20. Still the same today. Now I wish my arms were longer. Good luck with your procedure.

There is something about having a doctor modify my cornea and retina that just makes me a little to nervous. I would be that one in a million that they mess up on. You folks are a lot braver than I am.

My procedure lasted maybe 15 minutes tops. Was actually kind of cool when the corneal flap was folded over out of the way so the laser could do its thing. Took only seconds for each eye. Not a big deal.heh....heh...

With PRK they map each eye and put the cards into a computer and the laser does the rest. I was literally done in about 2 minutes. Check in and prep took the longest.

Do the PRK, all you do is lay there and look at a red light (the laser) listen to a little sizzle and your done. No pain, your eyes are chalked open. At first the red light is blurry then it's crystal clear, and it's done.

Was it painful at all or stressful with that eye-holding-open contraption?

What it comes down to is which procedures are possible after your eye exam and eye mapping. Everyone is different. A good Lasik doc will let you know your options. It's not a matter of which procedure should you chose beforehand. Budget can come into play too of course but most places offer financing for what your insurance won't cover.

Yeah it looks like PRK is the way I’ll end up going just due to too thin corneas for Lasik. My understanding is that the surgeon I’m going to uses a laser for the ablation vs the old method of alcohol, or whatever. I’ll know for sure tomorrow.

Also, as for redoing lasik, I *think* that PRK is what is used when a redo is needed. I don’t think they reopen the flap from lasik.

OK, quick update... this is about to go down. I’m going thru a couple of tests still to confirm Lasik or PRK but should be a wrap soon.

Whoa.... that was a crazy experience! My corneas remeasured at 507 and 497 so Lasik was a “GO”. The experience went pretty quick and I can really only describe as a bit uncomfortable. We got home and I slept all day - from 1-6p. I’m about to drink a beer and crash again. However, 7 hours later, I’m already seeing 20/20. I think when the swelling goes down, I’ll be floored!

Woolfson Eye Institute did a great job here in Atlanta!

I need to suck it up and get this done. I've been wearing glasses since the second grade. Wore contacts in high school, but after a while it felt like I had sand under the contact in one eye, so back to glasses for the past 27 years. I'd love nothing more than to be able to see 20/20 again like I could when I was 7 yo.

Had it done 8 yrs ago. Love it. Be sure to keep your eyes lubricated with eye drops to help your eyes heal faster. If you have a halo effect at night don't worry it will go away after awhile.

Update: slept 9 hours last night and woke up seeing crystal clear! Fuck yes! I went outside in the dark and no starbursts or other odd halos around the streetlights - everything looked normal! I’m smiling ear to ear!!

Back to the surgeon later this morning for a check up and then more taking it easy for a couple more days.

Yes on the drops - prednisone drops every hour, antibiotic drops 4x day and tears as needed.

    Just wow....

Cool beans!! Keep your eyes lubricated, notice the pattern. I woke up once and it felt like my eye was stuck to the back of my eye lid. It was a "Klong" moment (sudden rush of shit to the heart or head). So keep the peepers moist.

Back from the first checkup and am seeing 20/20 in both eyes already. Doc says I’ll likely heal to 20/15 and maybe 20/10. I can’t imagine it being much better than it is right now.

Yes, thera tears and drops, and sleep, are my go to right now....
