Hello all. I need a dump trailer for my remodeling and home building business. I need 4’ sides because the debris is generally pretty large, such as millwork, cabinetry, drywall, etc. Problem is I can’t seem to find one with the tall sides under 12k or 10k GVWR. The one I want is 12k. So, do you think it would be okay to get the 12k as long as I watch the payload that goes into it? The trailer itself is 3500lbs. I already have airbags and would get a wd hitch. I should be able to keep each load under 8000lbs. My tundra is supposedly rated to pull 9800lbs. Thanks for your input.

While not recommended, I towed 11.5k total in enclosed trailer with another 650lb in the truck. I did have to add a helper spring since my stock springs were completely flattened. How far did I tow? from Jacksonville, NC to Tehachapi, California with a detour to Pensacola, Fl. My MPG went down to three when I passed through the mountains of New Mexico and Arizona.

Welcome. My friends have larger dump trailers. I just have a 5x8 and really like the compact size. With a single lb axle it holds a lot of material. I recently hauled 1,400 sq feet of pavers. the small trailer actually carried as much material as the huge, heavier trailer. Sure more fit into the larger trailer but with the added weight of the trailer itself it was a wash. I was going over a steep, curvy, congested highway that had 900 accidents and 3 fatalities last year so I only carried about 4,000 - 4,400 lbs. per load + trailer weight.

Thank you for the replies. Most of the driving will be around town, from job site to dump. Maybe I’ll go with the 12k I want and keep the load weight in check.

    I’m just going to ask:

    - Are you going to run a legit business?
    - Is TX hard on people in Commerse?

If you answered “yes” to either, don’t do it. Believe it or not, if stopped in a DOT checkpoint they will be looking at your trailer GVWR, and it better be rated below what the truck is, regardless of how much weight is on the trailer.

I had to go through DOT checkpoints almost weekly with my prior career and would see 1/2 ton trucks getting parked quite often. Some of the issues:
-DOT or MC numbers not clearly marked on truck.
    -overweight.
    -insurance
Mostly I would be in a class 7-8 truck or a F350-550. Our digger line truck had overweight ticket with us all the time, since it was 2500 lbs over the axle rating before even putting a tool on the truck.

Maybe @GNTundra can elaborate on DOT rules more. He runs commercially, but not in a 1/2 truck. A Class A would help your cause, but your still screwed on weight rating.

I would have to be careful with my current truck and weight ratings if starting my own business and using my 14k flatbed trailer. Legally my truck can tow 13000 lbs conventionally with my 1 ton SRW truck. A 3/4 ton can tow 14500 lbs conventionally in the same year/ make of truck. Well why did I buy a darn 1 ton then? Load rating. The same 3/4 ton that can tow 14500 lbs only has a capacity of 3000 lbs or less. With options the load capacity was usually 2500 lbs or less. My 1 ton has a load capacity of 3800 lbs, and when properly equipped with a gooseneck trailer, can tow a lot more than the 3/4 ton truck.

I would fix this problem by just purchasing a GN trailer. Problem solved.

I ran a dump trailer with my Tundra.

    Another option for you:

    - buy a tilt bed flatbed trailer, install 4’ walls using plywood and stake pockets.

DOT regs won't apply if you stay under 26000 gvwr combined. If you stay in State you do not need dot numbers or mc numbers. Check your gvwr for the truck. If you get the 12gvwr trailer your truck needs to stay at 14gvwr or less.

Most guys in pickups get into trouble because they hook into a big trailer and then go cross state lines or don't realize you can easily need a class A CDL med card and log book, and if they don't have those then they normally don't have the required safety equipment or authority.

    Everything boils down to GVWR

Thanks for the DOT warnings. I am aware of the GVWR of truck and trailer relations which was a reason for my mental delima. I can say that I for sure won’t be passing any weigh stations or check points in my routs. My business is almost all within a 10 mile radius around town in Dallas proper where no interstate driving is required. The city cops have bigger fish to fry than the every other truck that is pulling a trailer. In TX under 26k combined weight is okay without CDL (from what I understand). Am considering the plywood in stake holes, but would rather have a full height gate. I can get a 7k GVWR with 3’ sides but only on 6x10 where a 12’ would be better. I’m trying to eliminate some of the outrageous costs I pay to the dumpster companies (I could buy 2 or 3 trailers a year for what I pay them). Thanks again!

Funny, all the times I ever was pulled into a DOT checkpoint was in residential areas. I was never OTR....long term.

Dallas police are too busy fighting real crime to bother with trucks and trailers. There are so many landscaping trucks and other construction vehicles all over the place in every day traffic. You wouldn’t believe the rigs you see set up that are cruising around. I think I’ll get the 7k set up so there are no issues to worry about, I won’t have to worry if I want to go down the highway.

Here's a picture of it. It's about 12 yrs old now. The pump failed once and when I went back to where I purchased it they told me the manufacturer had stopped making 'em. They did have 1 pump left over and sent it to me for free. Also, it originally had had a 3,500 lb axle which I bentt, overloading it, and replaced with a 5200 lb axle.
