Looking for a 2017 OEM backup camera replacement?

Has anyone replaced their OEM factory backup camera with something with better resolution?

My buddy has a 2016 Super Duty and looking at the clarity of his backup camera vs mine has got me thinking there's higher res options out there. Mine seems really grainy and pixelated.

Any cheaper options? Backup camera technology has to be pretty good these days.

never thought about that but your right im sure there are higher quality cameras available and its probably pretty easy to do I been thinking of adding a front camera im gonna look around and see what I can find

Whats the resolution of the head unit? I'd imagine that's your limiting factor rather than the camera.

Gotta say though, this seems like spending money for the sake of it... Your money though, do as you please... But for me, I just want to see if I'm about to hit something, don't really feel the need for HD resolution here... Have at it Ford, rather than splurging money on a 4k back up camera, how about a truck that actually works more times than not?

 

I purchased a tailgate handle camera for an F150 which wasn't equipped for it. I had the camera tied into a Kenwood aftermarket radio. The resolution was not noticeably better than what the OEM manufacturers currently install on their vehicles.

Now that you mention it I guess it could be the screen resolution rather than the camera.

Not looking to spend $$ just for the sake of spending $$. Just thought there’d be a better option out there.

 

I think one of the problems with OEM camera is the head unit. The positioning of it in the dash makes it damn near impossible to see in the daytime hours if the sun is shining in on it. If they would make it more upright or lower it in the dash, it would make it more visible. In my VW, you could shine a spot light on that screen and I still would prolly be able to see it haha. Maybe it’s time I tinted my front windows haha

 

After installing a less $20 front facing camera, the head unit isn’t the issue. My front camera is easily more clear than the OEM rear camera. Not sure what Toyota did this. Anyway, I’m just going to live with as I can see what need out the back. Good luck.

 

I think the oem camera is cheap garbage with poor resolution.

We have a plug-n-play harness for 2010+ Tundras through my employer that allows you to use one of the cameras that we have available. These are typically used when someone is removing the bed to add an aftermarket service body or removing the tailgate to use a slide-in camper (really anything where the OE camera is no longer in place). Example would be my 2018 on which I installed the A.R.E. MX HD shell and lost the tailgate. I added the camera to the top of the camper shell and the harness plugged into the factory harness under the bed to keep backup camera functionality while giving me more of a Birdseye view.
