I am looking at purchasing a 1st Gen Tundra specifically to tow a light travel trailer. Looking through on-line ads, I saw only one reference to a towing package (which may or may not have been an error). I cannot find the original specs that might list the options available at time of purchase.

My major concern is a cooling capacity for the transmission. Is it needed? If so, is there a towing kit option in the original specs?

    Thanks in advance.

my old '03 tundra ac 4.7 sr5 towing package was rated for 7,000 lbs. Had transmission cooler,135 amp alternator prewired for brake controller. On 1st gen turn the overdrive off when towing. just my .02 worth.

    good luck, john

Thank you, John. I take it by your note that, in fact, a towing kit was available for 1st Gen Tundras. My observation is that very few of listed used sales include that statement, leading me to believe that few of the used fleet is so equipped. That leads to the question: Does anyone have experience with a Dorman aftermarket transmission cooler or with other brands?

My '03 has the towing package, definitely an option. A transmission cooler is hard to mess up. Dorman should be fine.

    Thank you, Anti,
Your reply confirms my more recent finding. I was using Autotrader.com to search and have now switched to Cars.com. The later has more detailed information and I see "towing package" or "transmission cooler" on about 30% of the offerings. Looks like Cars.com scans the VIN database. Also, thank for the info on Dorman; I am prepared to add a cooler, but would like to get a factory installed all else being more or less equal.

2000 SR5 V8..U-haul tow bar. Wiring tapped into existing harness. Stock alternator, but would like to find that higher amp you speak of. No trailer brakes, just don't tailgate, trailer has new tires and wheel bearings, and it use to be a pop up camper. Capable of 80 mph, 90 peek, and very steady, but usually keep it under 75. Overdrive very seldom, had to be going fast on flat road, but normally in drive. So with the new radiator, there is the trans cooler in it, then the stock external oil cooler, and I have some aftermarket probably from Auto Zone and it's more than twice the size of the stock one. About 6,000 miles with trailer and car last year.
